  1. Make sure you've got a contingency plan for everything. I.e van breaks down, hire company. Stuff gets stolen, insurance and contacts to replace short term etc Probably the biggest problem faced by a new business is finance. Watch the terms you offer people very carefully. Oh and generally everything costs twice as much and takes twice as long as it should. Enjoy it Rob
  2. Have you got work booked in, or are you just starting up. Ie could you guarantee wages for 6 months. I've not got the experience but know someone that may be interested....... Rob

  4. Always difficult pricing callout jobs, unless you have a system set up and handed to the client in advance. Is it a regular client - Ifso keeping a good relationship is vital, if not will there be more work now as a result of the job? If it's a one off with no prospect of more work then I know others that would take the mick with price... I would say that I would price it for a normal job, then put extras on top. For instance extra groundie wage plus an extra bonus for yourself - same proportion extra as the groundie compared to your normal wage? Rob

ANybody upgraded theres or got an old one knocking about that they don't use. Loler tickets not important as it won't be used commercially until I'm properly practiced then I'll probably buy new. Rob
  6. Nope, I''ve replaced the cap and it works fine now, Still cant work out whats wrong with the old one though. It works sometimes but not others whereas the new one works all the time. They appear to be exactly the same... but they definitely aint! Rob
  7. Yer I've experienced needing to push the cap down, esp if you overfill with oil on other saws. Its hard to explain but different on this one. I think I might buy another oil cap, and see if it's any better. Rob
  8. Sorry should have said as well that mines an american import. Doesn't do it all the time, I guess I was wondering if it would be worth my while ordering a new cap on the basis it might be faulty? Obviously not worth it if its a common fault! Rob
  9. Anyody else had problems with the oil caps on newer saws. I know it used to be a problem when someone inexperienced used one, but I can't get it to work properly. I end up having to push the bottom round with a screwdriver before I can turn the toggle at the top (reading that it doesn't make sense but I can't think how else to describe it!) P.s I have had a few others try it to make sure I'm not being stupid and they'e stuggled to! Rob
  10. I think technically I may need one for certain jobs that are a bit further away from home. Time for some more digging. Could make for an interesting working day. Drive, rest, work, rest, drive, stop overnight, drive, rest, drive, oh and fit some work in somewhere....
  11. Yep I've had to do the trailer test to tow anything over 750kg (what a nonsense that is let people tow, or don't, why have a stupid weight limit.....) Must admit I got stopped by VOSA without a trailer, and asked them theoretically and they didn't really know, or wouldn't tell. They did say something about a radius from base and the type of work. Anybody know where we'd get a definitive answer? Rob

  13. Looks similar but different........ to mine. It might be based upon an old entec/timberwolf design. How long are your blades/ how many screw holes have they got. I get my blades from saturn machine knives in sheffield. There good but watch the quoted price doesn't include Vat or P&P. Rob
  14. But if you use a skip you don't need a waste transfer licence as your not transporting the waste, the skip firm is. What is ridiculous is that you can't get it over the phone within a week. It takes forever......
  15. But that's not a law. It is law that you need a chainsaw ticket or supervision, but no actual law once you've got that one. Unless someone wants to correct me..... Rob
  16. I've done it and therefore may sound like a bit of a hypocrite here. It isn't really a challenge, I did it when I wasn't exactly fit but it did knacker me. When I drove for it on the over hand, well thats a challenge!! Think about what your doing a stupid amount of driving, along with massive erosion to commonly used tracks that require no skill to navigate - yet people still get lost. If you do decide to do it then good luck, but please be considerate and be aware of the negative impacts. See ukclimbing.com and do a search. Rob

  18. Do you not mean don't cut off anything bigger that 30mm diameter, ie just over an inch in size? As the old adage goes if you need to use a chainsaw your taking to much off. Rob
  19. I'm no expert either, I haven't been in this game long at all, so I'm sure somebody may have better advice..... I'd be tempted to recommend a crown lift (as already suggested) and crown clean. I.e Remove any deadwood, crossed or rubbing brances and then thin ever so slightly at the same time. You'll be amazed at how that will open out the canopy and allow the light through. As for the best time of year, presumably in it's doormant season?? As I said I am still learning so if anybody's got constructive criticism please let me know Rob
  20. Just wondering what sizes people make their logs in when they cut and split them. I don't sell that many at the moment split, just drop loads off for people to cut and split. Rob
  21. Of course there's no need to have lessons. Look up the stuff on the internet, have a practice. Try the test. Maybe I got lucky but it worked for me. Rob P.S Box or not trailer is dependent on vehicle age or something stupid like that....
  22. Not a sparky so take anything I say as quite possibly nonsense. Two ways I would do it. Either a bigger consumer unit with more breakers in, or add an extra one like many people have to do for a shower. Personally I wouldn't double it up to another circuit as it could cause problems. Think it may also be the case that you need another breaker in the shed/garage for regs compliance. Part P regs mean that work needs to be inspected depending on when it was done....... The colour of your armoured cable is a big giveaway.
  23. That's what worried me when it was first suggested. I'd never do anything (well business wise for a client) that I wasn't happy in my competence to carry out. Seems that there are quite a few people that specialise in doing it though so it looks like it could be a goer - I'm learning all the time! Thanks again for all the advice, much appreciated. Rob
