  1. Guess it depends on where you live and age. £68 a day in the south is fairly tight though plenty of people get just than.... If you want to keep him motivated and productive on that rate, maybe think on other ways to give him something back. Most employees seem to respond well to training.
  2. Chris, that is an offer i may take you up on.... Only in Cambs so wouldnt take long to venture your direction at some point. Do like your point about having a machine that works how you want it too. Guess thats part of the challenge. Hiluxstihl.... its a beast alright! I see you both kept to fairly common designs (give or take).... Im sure without telling me so, that is probably good advice. Cheers guys... This all started after working for a company on the M25 widening scheme a couple of summers ago... They designed and built most of their heavy equipment for specific applications and at some point i thought... if they can do that... I can make a log splitter.... Watch this space!!
  3. Maybe one worth throwing at the HSE....
  4. To make life easier... Lose a few kilo's.... If you already work fairly hard there is not much point adding more strenuous exercise into the mix.... recovery time would increase and you may end up knackered at work until you build up the resistance.
  5. Would like to hear if anyone has ventured as far as to make their own log splitter and if so how much savings did they make and to what rating? Any advice will be greatly received....
  6. My point exactly! Im sure it would not have been anyone on here who has stands at the show
  7. From experience it seems college lecturers actually suggest type c trousers for novice climbers (learners) as.... It is highly recommended by the HSE. If the HSE highly recommends something.... I feel it would be unlikely and foolhardy for a lecturer in there position of responsibility to suggest not wearing type c when climbing. Imagine in the event of an unfortunate accident?? That said.... the HSE do actually state that: Where wearing Type C is impractical (e.g. because of the higher risk of heat stress), it may be appropriate to use Type A, where justified by risk assessment. Chainsaw Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) I think it may be best for a novice climber to make his first mistake wearing as much protection as possible.... Live to tell the tale and learn from his error. I prey we do not suddenly see news reports of inexperienced climbers with leg injuries which could have been prevented by wearing type c.....
  8. Large paint syringes? Have seen these used effectively in the past... Likely against all types of legislation but worked all the same.
  9. Seen this in the Daily Mail... Something it didnt pick up on was the fact the guy is using a topper which is apparent from the photo. Wonder how an untrained operative got his hands on that.... To many arborist in the trade who complain when they see people using toppers without their tickets but will go the next day and buy their friend one. Amazed by the apparent fact that even after a £6,000 fine he went out and did all the relevant training!!! What the hell am I doing wrong?
  10. Amazed! Most skilled tree surgeon's, I would expect, would know at least one of the various methods to measure a tree from the ground and with little equipment. Can't see many of the lazy gits I know (myself included) climbing to the tips and dangling a rope down
  11. Measuring the height of a tree with the Woodland Trust Brightened my day anyway!
  12. I cant imagine wearing the protective gear in that heat!!

  13. Thanks again... Im non native and have an accent myself so should be a slice of new year fun!!
  14. Im gonna say something honest every day... 2012... Year I lose all my friends
  15. Not aware of him Rover.... Will resort to Google to try find a contact number.... Thanks
  16. Thanks Alec... Will try get in touch with him over the weekend.
  17. How's all going over there fella??

  18. Can anyone help me with contact numbers of woodturners in the Cambridge area? Would be great if anyone could make a couple of personal recommendations
  19. Xerxses.... Would it be possible to get a link to the project your spoke of earlier? Pleaseee!!!
  20. Hi Scottie, Biggest changes will likely be surrounding 'Law'. As our knowledge of certain pathogens has increased over the last few years, its likely that some of the information on them will also be dated. Im thinking specifically on control methods here....
  21. Great point Rob. This was discussed during a number of our P&D lectures. Surprised it wasn't termed that from the beginning.
  22. The fungus is likely unrelated to the problem. Im no expert on 'bacterial wetwood' but the slime flux in your photo's is usually closely associated.
  23. Have thiese pictures been taken recently or earlier in the year?
