  1. As I said, I am, for the most part. I really dont have a choice if I wanna put food on the table. I dont have to agree with it or remain silent about it either. But the reality of it is most folk round me are just ignoring it all. We still have folk over, we still all shake hands, we all stand side-by-side and have a blether. The Council Contractors are working outside the house just now. Road closed jobbie. All carrying on as if it never happened, which is quite encouraging really. Happy for me to pop down, have a chat, see whats going on and bring them brews. They even dug a tree out I was wanting rid of for me, which was nice.
  2. I was trying to reply to this message, for some reason it didn't get quoted properly. >
  3. So it's not surprising that we're well into a second spike then is it; with so many selfish inconsiderate INDIVIDUALS like this around. Proverbially shitting in other people's gardens.
  4. To be honest, (and this may be a controversial view point!), I'm more upset about the wanton destruction of the environment. The colossal waste of all our money is terrible in itself and is more than enough reason to cancel the stupid thing. But at the end of the day it's just money; a transient thing really. The environmental destruction is permanent, those fragile ecosystems such as ancient woodlands are not going to come back. That is the really sad and depressing thing about this. They can't even claim that they didn't know about the damage caused anymore. We are in the midst of an environmental catastrophe: every day we get scary facts about how we are ****************ing up our planet in such massive ways. And yet still they go ahead and **************** it up some more for no decent reason. [emoji26][emoji26]
  5. Yep, when CV19 first started to become a serious issue for the UK I thought to myself at least there'll be one silver lining to the cloud; bloody HS2 will get canned as there's no way they'll be able to justify the spending, and it won't be needed anyway with many people working from home. How sadly naive I was!
  6. Oh Jesus, it's even worse than I thought then. To be wasting all this money whilst there are so many more deserving cases out there desperate for some is just outrageous. I think we could actually say it's criminal when you consider that people's lives are at stake with things like the NHS and social care. I very much doubt that anyone will die if HS2 doesn't get built. How many thousands will though as a result of an underfunded health service.
  7. Why are Boris and his team of Muppets such monumental Bell Ends?! HS2: Moving ancient woodland habitat for rail line flawed, ecologists say WWW.BBC.CO.UK Soil is being moved to new sites but ecologists question whether the process is effective. To think that they can recreate in a couple of years something as complex as an Ancient Woodland that has taken many many centuries to evolve is just ludicrous. There are several explanations that occur to me;- 1) It illustrates a complete lack of understanding of the natural environment and is just another example of our arrogance as a species, humans 2) It illustrates a complete disregard for the natural environment 3) They, Boris and his currupt chums, think that the general public is stupid enough to believe B.S. like Translocation of an entire Ecosystem. For the life of me I can't understand why this disastrous project is still going ahead, other than because its a money making scheme for big business and already rich and powerful individuals. It makes even less sense in light of the current Covid situation. It makes me so angry. More so because we as the general public have absolutely no say in the matter. Even though billions and billions of our money is being wasted on it. That money would be far better spent in helping mitigate the financial disaster that is the fallout from CV19.
  8. Daisugi: The Japanese Forestry Technique of Creating a Tree Platform for Other Trees WWW.SPOON-TAMAGO.COM photograph courtesy Yusuke NaritaSometime in 15th century Japan, a horticulture technique called daisugi was developed in Kyoto. Written as 台杉 and literally meaning platform cedar, the technique resulted in a tree that resembled an open palm with multiple trees growing out if it, perfectly verti
  9. I've just stumbled across this. Very impressive.
  10. SUP - Is that Stand Up Paddle Boarding? I've never really seen the point of that. Non of the excitement of surfing or windsurfing.
  11. Ah, that's reassuring to hear. The beach I'm thinking about is Exmouth. Used to be all windsurfers, now it's all kite surfers. Not exactly big wave surfing there so maybe that explains it. I've never heard of windfoiling, interesting.
  12. Met office and YR get my vote.
  13. Is windsurfing still a thing? My late father was a real fanatic for many years, 20 or 25 years ago. His local beach for it was always crammed with windsurfers. If I ever go there these days it's all kite surfers, I'm lucky to see one windsurfer. Always makes me a bit sad, and surprised.
  14. Yep, L & S Engineers are the business.

    Walnut

I brought a few back from Turkey and a couple germinated. One grew quite big in a pot but then died over winter when I planted it out. I think I planted in the wrong place and it got too wet.

    Walnut

We went to Turkey a couple of years ago. We found some huge walnuts in a market one day, they looked to be a similar size to these. I believe there are many types or varieties of walnuts, the ones we eat are just few. In China they have them in a range of sizes from pea to egg sized.
  17. This says summer to autumn for chip and T- budding. I've only ever done whip- and-tongue grafting.
  18. Grafting ornamental plants and fruit trees WWW.RHS.ORG.UK The purpose of grafting is to combine one plant's qualities of flowering or fruiting with the roots of another that offers vigour and resilience. This is a difficult task and requires lots of skill and practice. In most cases, trees and shrubs are available to buy already grafted onto a rootstock.
  19. I agree with the grafting, everything about the idea. Except the time of year. In my understanding this isn't the right time of year. It should be February/March, when the tree is dormant but just about to start regrowing for the year.
  20. What about a Multisaver with micro-pulley attached?
  21. Very good firewood, so that's a consolation.

    Jokes???

Got me a new cheap saw. Very eco friendly too.
  23. This is an amazing online resource, a wealth of information, and all for free! Everything you need to know about fitting a wood burner. See this page for lintels;- Fitting a fireplace lintel - The Stove Fitter's Warehouse WWW.STOVEFITTERSWAREHOUSE.CO.UK There should always be a lintel or arch above your fireplace/builder’s opening (to support the building material above). Sometimes you discover that an errant builder forgot. You can often find this lintel or arch by shining a torch inside your builder’s opening (assuming you have an opening or have started excavating)
  24. Stovefitters Manual - installing a wood burning stove and chimney - The Stove Fitter's Warehouse WWW.STOVEFITTERSWAREHOUSE.CO.UK The definitive guide to choosing and installing (self install or via a Hetas professional) a wood burning or multifuel stove and suitable chimney.
