I agree, the stem normally ends up being a foot or so higher than the outside of the "flat top". Though you probably won't see it from the ground, with pespective and elevation etc. Looks worse when you're up there at the top, desperately trying to get everything level. I think it gets worse the lower down that you're trying to take the tree to, due to the way they grow. The lowest branches are the drooppiest.

I think the problem may be to do with hibernation,/dormancy rather than the actual cold. A lot of things, plants, insects, birds, animals aren't going into hibernation earlier enough, or at all, due to our generally warmer autumns and winters now. If proper cold weather does finally come it nails things that aren't hibernating as they should. The natural world is confused, it can't keep up with the pace of change.

So we were previously alluding to a newly discovered type of rope fetish (possibly a Polish penchant), whereas we now seem to be going back to a more familiar variety of rope fetish. Can't beat a good Arbtalk derail!

They've not exactly got a good track record at the moment. Doesn't sound like it's a culture that favours the victims in some, (or a lot?), of cases. ..............
