  1. I used this for my chopping board. Brandon Bespoke 100% Pure Mineral Oil 250ml - Chopping Board Oil - Food Safe WWW.EBAY.CO.UK Pure Mineral Oil 250ml – Food Safe. The high quality Pure Mineral Oil penetrates into the wood, providing protection and revitalizes the wood’s natural colour and character. It will also prolong the life of the wood.
  2. Beautiful looking slab of Acacia that by the way. The fluted exterior as much as the nice grain. It'll look lovely when finished I reckon. What is it going to be?
  3. I'd fill again straight away and then sand. Just in case sanding dust gets in the way of the refill.
  4. Cheers. I used to have Niger seeds out all the time, but gave up when I was getting no takers. Thinking about it, maybe that was a problem; they were getting too stale. I'll give the feeder a good clean and try again with some new seeds. I normally have a mixed feed, sunflower hearts being one of the ingredients.
  5. Exactly. I've no particularly strong feelings about either. Foie gras is actually rather tasty. They should probably both be stopped really but they're very small issues in comparison to the whole factory farming/intensively reared livestock industry. I suppose fur, and leather, is worse if that's the only part of the animal that's used. If the meat isn't eaten as well then it's a waste. Worse still if it's wild animals being killed just for their fur.
  6. So Jacob Rees Mogg likes to eat foie gras, and his wife likes to wear fur. Surprise surprise. Ministers set to drop UK ban on foie gras and fur imports WWW.BBC.CO.UK The proposed measure is likely to be dropped from an animal welfare bill, after ministers raised concerns.
  7. Parisian Tree Surgeons were probably ahead of their time!
  8. It's a Munter Hitch I reckon.
  9. When did they start charging for it? I thought I remembered it being completely free, though I didn't take much notice as the company sorted it.
  10. I've used DraftSight quite a bit. I'd recommend it. A lot of the commands and interfaces are common or very similar to AutoCAD. I was working with factory layout drawings; importing/exporting, viewing and producing simple drawings. No idea what it's like for mapping work, but worth a look I reckon. There's the normal free trial version available, or you can pay for the real thing. It's not exactly cheap, but a damn sight cheaper than the extortionate AutoCAD! Draftsight: Powerful 2D Drawing, 3D Design and CAD Drafting Solution WWW.DRAFTSIGHT.COM World-class CAD software for 2D drawing and drafting. Greater performance and flexibility at the best price on the market.
  11. Looks like I was wrong, too cynical. Mink Oil is actually made of mink oil! Mink oil - Wikipedia EN.M.WIKIPEDIA.ORG
  12. I think any kind of Dubbin type greasy stuff, leather treatment/conditioner/waterproofer does the trick. I'm currently using something called Mink Oil, it's just a fancy marketed Dubbin I think, doesn't seem any better than cheaper alternatives I've used in the past. They key is to put something on quite frequently. He says remembering that he's not done his boots for ages .......
  13. It might be your last protest unless you can get a load in over the next couple of months! If they get their way you might get fined or banged up for doing so when/if this bill gets passed. See item 3 - Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill - JUSTICE JUSTICE.ORG.UK From overcrowded prisons to endemic racial disproportionality, there are many pressing issues across the criminal justice system which need comprehensive, urgent redress. The Police, Crime, Sentencing and Courts Bill purports to empower “the police and courts to take more effective action against crime and lead [to] a fair justice system.” While some of the aspects […]
  14. Yep, that was the other reason to bring some home, I'll keep some back for carving etc.
  15. Cheers. As expected really; I had it in mind that it would be akin to willow. Couldn't agree more with the second statement.
  16. What's it like to burn? I took a lime tree down last week and brought some of the timber home for logs. I don't have high expectations, given that it's so soft to cut.
  17. I've never tried neoprene gloves but I can vouch for neoprene wetsuits. A correctly fitting, (tight enough), one is amazingly warm even in cold water.
  18. Another recommendation for the two glove system from me too. I wear a pair of nitrile gloves underneath my normal work gloves when its cold and wet. Having dry hands helps to keep them warmer for longer. Having said that, the Sealskins are very good, though a little on the bulky side. I sometimes use them for cycling, and they're just about dexterous enough to work the controls.
  19. Fine as a pedestrian, not so much as a driver. That is the better way round at least. They should have gone the whole hog and banned cars entirely IMO.
  20. Very good ideas in theory but rather odd in practice. Have you been there? I have; it was all quite disconcerting. Not bad, just disconcerting. The blurred lines between pedestrian spaces and traffic spaces, between commercial and domestic areas, between municipal and private spaces. Maybe it's still just too new, needs time to weather in.
  21. It means cutting off the lowest branches all around the tree so as to visually "lift" the crown. (Increase the height of bare trunk before the crown starts).
  22. A bit of timber and a bucket are surprisingly effective for mashing apples, small to medium quantities anyway. I had a 6" x 3/4 foot log, with conveniently placed branch stubs left on. I also tried a plaster mixing attachment on a drill one year. That was good but no faster than the log really. Cheers for the tip about the swinging top beam. I'll try to remember that. I'm planning to make a bigger press at some point with the big machine thread from what I think is an old fencing strainer. Vigo do some very good stuff, for a price, they're not cheap! I've got one of their small countertop basket presses.
  23. Thanks. That all makes sense. Not something I've thought about before. So Mick was right, top marks @Mick Dempsey!
  24. Ummm. Fair point. We'll just have to wait for @JSN to clear this little confusion up then. Other trees also have a thin crown I'd say, Birch for instance.
  25. [emoji106] Ah, thanks. Of course I've heard of C.F. I read it as Ivy only kills stressed trees and Ash. (I missed the inference; Ash trees stressed by CF.)
