  1. This program was a good discussion on the whole Israel/Gaza situation. Lots of background and in-depth analysis. The Briefing Room - What was Hamas thinking? - BBC Sounds WWW.BBC.CO.UK What was the thinking behind Hamas's attack on Israel and what comes next? The concluding sentence from the presenter was "What's coming will be grim and complicated."
  2. You could try having a drive around after a storm or some high winds. You'll have a greater chance of seeing tree work going on then.
  3. Exactly, you've got it again, less debt doesn't mean more money to spend. It doesn't mean lower taxes either it seems. Have you seen what Mr Hunt is saying? I didn't ask, but glad to hear your Mrs shares the same views on debt as I do. Actually, it's Friday, so I'm slightly uneasy about what other domestic details you may share with us!

    Jokes???

Not sure whether to put this on here or the cooking thread.
  5. Good point. £36bn was saved by the cancellation of the northern leg, (though 8.3 of that is now going to fix road potholes apparently). So that leaves 27.7. Which is more than enough to cover the debt repayments of 23 plus the 1 that the NHS is asking for.
  6. Ah yes, that infamous dividend we were promised. Proving be be rather elusive so far.
  7. There should be a sizable chunk of money from HS2 kicking around in the system somewhere now. I'm sure just £1bn of that could be invested into the NHS.
  8. I'd forgotten all about those sand art pictures until I read this. I was fascinated by them for a while as a kid. I might buy one now - "for my son".
  9. Exactly, you've got it! That's the problem, religion can be used to justify all sorts of barbaric acts of violence. Not to mention all the other bad stuff that goes on in its name; oppression, child abuse, subjugation of women, animal cruelty, restriction of birth control, intolerance .........
  10. Opinels are indeed a joy to keep sharp, all they need is a couple of wipes along either side with a stone. My only gripe is that they don't seem to make a straight bladed offering, the normal curve isn't always what you need. Talking of old school penknives, Tailors Eye Witness used to be very good, and reasonably priced. I've not bought one for years, and it looks like they're all SS as well now, so maybe not as good. They used to be carbon steel.
  11. Yep. Organised Religion - ain't it great! So here's a handy guide to who's friends and who's enemies with who in this particular school playground. Children's version;- And Grownups version;- https://www.slate.com/blogs/the_world_/2014/07/17/the_middle_east_friendship_chart.html Obviously a bit out of date but I doubt that things have changed much. Stuff like this tends to last for generations unfortunately. I bet quite a lot more of those little faces in that matrix would be smiley green ones if religion were taken out of the mix.
  12. Yep, that sums it all up really. A tragedy for all caught up in it, regardless of which side they're on. Just got to hope the situation doesn't escalate now. Bad enough as it is, without other vested interests getting drawn in. The Middle East is one big tinderbox, with countries like Iran handing out free matches.

    HS2 Over

Biodiversity of about 1 in that picture! Sorry, 2 - I didn't count the moss.

    HS2 Over

Here's a nice idea for just 1% of the cost of HS2;- """A £1 billion five-year plan is needed to save England’s ancient forests, which are more polluted, damaged and contain less wildlife than at any other point in history, the Woodland Trust has said. Its plan, which it said would cost 4% of the Government’s road building budget and 1% of HS2’s price tag, sets out how to reverse the problems identified in its 2021 report State of the UK’s Woods and Trees.""" ‘Irreplaceable habitats’ can be saved with £1bn five-year plan, says charity WWW.INDEPENDENT.CO.UK Only 9% of England’s native woods are in good condition and one third of all woodland species are in decline...
  15. I too was similarly confused when I looked into Borax a while back. Lots of conflicting information. I decided in the end that it might not be great, but it's really not too bad, and a hell of a lot better than lots of the nasty chemicals in other wood preservatives.
  16. Yep, I agree. They are an excellent fruit tree nursery. I've bought a couple of trees from them before. Pleasant and helpful staff in their marquee at that show too, The Tenbury Wells Applefest. They had 250 different varieties on display apparently!
  17. And lots and lots of different varieties of apples.
  18. Very fighty! Very bizarre. She should stick to sword carrying, she did a good job of that.
  19. I didn't hear it. What was the gist of it? I thought she was one of the better ones as well. I agree about top Tory women. I'm not sure who's more scary; Suella Braverman or Liz Truss. The likes of Nadine Dories, Priti Patel, Thérèse Coffey, Michelle Donelan etc, aren't much better.
  20. Brace yourselves boys and girls. You could be enjoying a lovely hot day tomorrow, or swimming for your life, depending where in the country you are. UK weather: 26C for parts of UK - but heavy rain warning for Scotland WWW.BBC.CO.UK An amber rain warning is in place for Scotland, while warm weather is forecast in other parts of the UK.
  21. I think the Amygdalin stuff breaks down to a cyanide compound, hence the toxicity.
  22. Amygdalin. Not heard of that before, cheers. Seems to be an interesting if controversial compound. Must be similar to the almond smelling stuff in Laurel leaves, they're all in the Prunus Genus anyway. Do you seek out the Amygdalin specifically for something or just happy to consume it alongside everything else? Pectin is another good thing contained within fruit and berries, and similarly, the more of the non fruit bits, (skins, seeds, stalks etc), you can consume the better. You're right about today's sweet tastes, things have moved far too far down that route. In the West we eat crazy amounts of the crap, and we're seeing the consequences of it. The tolerance for sharp/sour and bitter has been pretty much lost. Have you tried shop bought jam or other prepared "fruit" products? It's rank imo, just oversweet blandness, no real flavour. .
  23. Nice one. Thank you. Just need to find some room to plant a couple of trees now. This place has some good stuff;- https://www.pennardplants.com/products.php?cat=472
  24. Looks it to me. Or maybe a hybrid between Blackthorn and Damson or Bullace.
