If thats all that is wrong with the saw then cant it be repaired? (bodged) Cut a piece of aluminium sheet to shape and gaffa tape it to the bottom of the cracked handle. Sorted.

SBK mixed with parafin instead of water. At least thats what the old SBK worked with, not sure about the new version.

Hi, I have one, about 6-7 years old I guess.. we took some bits off it the other day but there is still plenty left. I have a feeliing the rear handle chain deflector bit might be broke though but I'm sure the rest of the handle is ok. I wouldn't be able to get it until monday to look though.

I saw a family with one in spain 20 years ago. Dad was zooming around on it off the beach (costa fortune/southern spain) being a knob. Then late in the day the 12 ish year old daughter wants a go, mum says no but she screams, dad puts her on it and holds the handles and lets her go round in circles around him just sitting on it with him controlling everything. Fine. So then 8 ish year old daughter wants a go. Mum says no way!! And she screams even louder than the first one. Dad lifts her on to it (engine still runing the whole time) she leans forward and grabs the handle bar and I assume its a thumb throttle, she grips that as well and she is off before dad can get hold of it. When is say "off" I mean gone! flat out fast out to sea towards Morocco. Mums hysterical dad is in shock, everybody screaming. The whole beach has been watchig these morons, so everybody is up and yelling for someone to do something. A couple of speed boats from further down the beach head off after her but she is seriously miles away and gripping on for dear life. If she had let go she would be ok but her reaction is to grip on! Eventually we could see her come round in a huge arc and headed back towards spain (more like Gibralter) and she went through a load of parked boats and hit the beach a couple of miles further down. Ambulances were all waiting by this time and mum and day had ran that way to see whats was left of her. Never found out if she died or not, but I guess they dont have a jetski anymore, probably not a marriage either.

Dont get me wrong, I'm not particularly fit, and could not run a half marathon tomorrow or any other day, but I can do tree work without it doing me in because my body has learned how to over time. I think it sounds as though you have a good measure of all the necessary qualities, but still I would say get some part time work with a company, small outfits are usually better than large ones, and learn from that as much, if not more than from college.

Ah, 40! Got there in the end! I'm 41 and climb nearly everyday, but i went through the pain barrier 15+ years ago, you will suffer big time if you try and become a climber! You will pass a CS unit if you can stand for 8hrs a day, but you will not be able to work for 8 hrs a day. Could you run a half marathon tomorrow? Only a half marathon, and you have all day to do it. But you need to be able to do it again the day after, and the day after that. Thats the kind of fitness you should be lookign at, no extreme fitness but long term endurance, plus evenings of paperwork and maintenance. Not being negative, but I'm just trying to explain how it is.

I know very little about those kind of courses, I have not done any. I climbed for years before even doing a CS unit. My company is based on my climbing skills (and of those that work for/with me) and my people skills and charm!! Along with some practical mechanical skills and common sense and logistics expertise and modesty! I leave all the science stuff to others, I know what my limitations are. I get the job done in the time it takes others to explain to the client what a cambium layer is, by which time they have died of boredom anyway. If you have free days while at college then get a job with a tree company, dragging brash and chipping. No CS units needed for that, and if you have a pre 97 drivign license then all the better.

Really good freelancers are expensive but can be worth it on the right jobs, but you would have to win those jobs in the first place and you mostly (not always) only do that by being the cheapest. There are so many catch 22's it unreal! If you have good people management skills then hiring in is a good idea.

If you are going to college to do a proper arb qualification then you will learn plenty of theory. If you have good sales skills then the two together make a good basis for a company, you could hire in the climbers etc and learn from them while you build the business side of things.

Age is not a barrier IMO, but if you are over 30ish then you had better be fit or hard enough not to notice how unfit you are! The youths will get there in the end as they have time on their side but anyone of any maturity needs to be one step ahead, a good driving licence helps and so does wisdom. Remember that CS units are not qualifications, they are just safety tickets, you can come away with all the tickets in the world but not necessarily be able to climb the first tree you come to. I once did evening classes in electricianing, it was easy in the classroom, top of the class for a maths and physics A grader nerd like me, but they didn't teach anything about how to rip someones house apart to install the new wiring. I soon realised I would never be able to do it as a job without years of experience, most sparkies would have the holes knocked out and wires in while I was still scratching my chin. Same would go for tree work, experience wins. So I stuck with tree work!
