  1. There are a lot of "shoulds" in there, that means nothing. Then in your second section you refer to employers needing various things, thats under employment law and granted that is an actual law. But to go and work for a client you dont have to have anything, and you dont have to have public liability, and you can work on your own if you want so you dont need employers liability either. I suppose all these laws are the reason that ****** get stopped everyday for doing tree work???????????? Never seen it happen. Trading standards may have somethign to say about it, but only if complaints are made and same with HSE.
  2. Why? Whos going to stop you? You can make a living using a chainsaw if you want, its a free country just about. CS is not in any way a license. Employment law is another thing though, so you would need CS units to be employed, but even then no one is going to stop you if you dont have them. Work away, just dont have an accident.
  3. You can begin whenever you want. You dont need any CS units to work for yourself, advertise as whatever you like, its only tree work there is no law as to what you can and cant do. CS units are certificates of safty they show employers (not clients) that you have been shown the basic safety methods for each unit. A bit like a driving license shows you know the basic rules of the road. They are not qualifiacations in tree work. Advertise away and see how you get on.
  4. I've got a SJ for sale, MK1 version, used two or three times. pm me
  5. I was told armpit to the floor, same difference really!
  6. I know! I think you still had it when I first met you in about 2004!!!
  7. Yes, I there was some rope called multiplat in the 90's but I could never get on with it, so I stuck with the three strand until about 97 I would think, then went to NE hi vee orange which is still one of the toughest, longest lasting ropes available today.
  8. Three strand rope (not NE safety blue, no idea what make this was) and a GQ parachutes harness, with no leg straps just a bum strap and waist strap. IIRC the rope was £35 and the harness I got second hand for £15. Add some karabiners that I had anyway and some prussik loops which I used to make out of more three strand and I was off! Never actually worked using the three knot system on a daily basis like treequip and some of the other more senior members here but did use now and then if needed.
  9. The novelty of fast cars soon wears off!
  10. I've still got mine in the shed, older than that stuff for sure!!
  11. Some policies are new for old, and some are not. The ones that are not are cheaper but they use loss adjusters to calculate the value of whats gone, they then compare that with the value of what is left and the amount you are insured for, and then calculate the settlement amount, which wont necessarily be the same as the value of what went missing. Once you have that settlement figure, it doesnt mean you then have to buy second stuff, you can buy what you want, but you rarely get enough to buy all new. New for old policies are better IMO, but more expensive premiums, and they usually replace the stuff for you from their own suppliers, so if you lost a type of saw that you didnt like much you would end up with another the same rather than some money to buy something different.
  12. Are you employed at the moment then?
  13. Pointless speculation and opinion. All the points above may well have been very carefully considered by all parties, once the decision is made to go ahead then its just tree work that someone is going to do. No point trying to second guess the what ifs etc. Maybe they will fell the lot next time round but this is a stop gap? Too many possibilities to even start making your own conclusions. Good work fellas!!
  14. Straight to normal work should be fine, I just mean take it easy on the first few tanks of fuel. So, lets say you have an 18 inch bar, dont start off cutting 20+ inch stuff.
  15. Usually just dont run it flat out for the first two tank fulls of fuel. Im sure brands differ but that is generally the best thing to do.

    PPI Claims?

I had a mortgatge with northern rock a while back, and added to it for home improvemnets etc. PPI was added to this additional part of my mortgage. Northern Rock are very good at giving it back because they are now tax payer owned. I got 8.2K last year!
  17. Yep, I guess so. The kind of jobs where there won't be much fluctuation in your price even if someone else is cheaper then it's not worth worrying about, but yes on bigger stuff it's important to go and have a think.
  18. Yes Pauls advice is very good. Personally I dont like mentioning price while I'm on site quoting. If asked I feel uncomfortable, not sure why and I'm sure its not a problem to do it that way but I prefer to think it over a bit on the drive home, and think how i can fit that job in with soemthing else or just figure a way to give a good price thats good for me too, whereas on the spot I might go too high and frighten them off or too low cos I hadnt thought about it and you cant then go home and write up a quote with a higher price.
  19. Can I just ask the OP how you know your quotes are "good and competitive"? Are you getting some feedback already?
  20. No nor can I, and I think gustharts kow that as well, but wont be any worse than the thing he's making and it look neater. With my rg (homemade) I have to be very careful to leave the tree facing the thing to get it retrieve ok.
  21. Yep, that bowline is no good!! Either back it up or use a figure eight knot. And that bit of tubing or some garden hose could go in that loop to help keep it open for retrieval.
  22. Simple answer is, neither!! WHy are you on a prussik loop? There are lots of hitches to try first before spending £150 on something that isnt much better than a good hitch. Try a distel with a cheap pulley for a few weeks at least, then maybe a VT. They can all be tied with the same cord as your using for your prussik loops and a cheap ISC gold pulley is around 15 quid I think, maybe another climber you know has a spare petzl fixe you can borrow. Get creative before spending bucks!
  23. Id have paid the bloke, or collected the wood another day when I had the money or discuss the payment time up front!! Thats what we've all been saying we would do all along, no ones hiding their opinions on this, especially the bloke who wanted paying!! What I wouldnt have done is mentioned such a pointless thing on an international arb forum.
