  1. I think experiences poeple probably could work together straight away, might need a bit of time to get used to things. My ground is exceptionally good though and he know waht I'm doing well before I do! In fact I never really know what I'm doing until I've done it. I hardly talk to him at all now. It all works really well.
  2. You might have the "app" in your hand but you don't own it. It belongs to the tree really! Once the permision is granted anyone can do the work. We all charge for applications, even if its included in the job it still not free. Tellign the customer its free is better IMO than telling them there is an additional charge. So if I've got 500 in my head and they say "will you do the app" I say yes of course, quote them 520 and say the app is free. If they say they'll do the app then you could give them a dicount. Always make them think they are winning. Then the 5% deposit is not a charge for the app. its just a deposit for the job before doing the app (for free!!) which comes off the final bill. Of course you are charging them a fixed amount or 5% for apps but just don't tell them. We are salesmen at the end of the day, you need to read each customer and make decisions based on that. Thats why I hate given a price in the spot, I'd rather go home and weigh up the job and customer before commiting. It usually ends up cheaper when I do that though!!!!!!
  3. They might not show the agent in the cases masterh looked at? Many people put in planning themselves before contracting a tree comapany for the work. Anyway, even if they did show an agent it means nothing. The permission is for the tree not the tree company, and its up to the tree company to try and get the work or keep it if they have already quoted. I still can't imagine any contract with the client would be binding before any work took place. They could always decide to go elsewhere for any reason. The only thing I can think of would be a 5% deposit on the work before the application is made. This would only be refundable if the application is turned down. If they then go elsewhere then at least you got your 5%. (a minimum amount would be good too). Might work?
  4. I think there is a good balance on this site. Plenty of information form yourself and others regarding fungi and diseases and structural strengths and weaknesses. This site cater for all thigns in its many areas of. I don't contribute much in those areas cos I know very little about it, but the information is there should I wish to learn more.
  5. You can't say that! Its not very PC!
  6. Is that lovely northern Irish lady coming too?
  7. There must be space for a workbench/vice somewhere on that chipper or truck??
  8. No, I don't think I can do that. They do their jobs and I do mine. Just enjoy the photos and videos from the rigging aspect as that is what they are intended for, and thats why they are in the rigging section. If I have concerns over tree health or TO decisions I'll post pictures and raise questions in the appropriate areas.
  9. I'm only stating my understanding of it. The chipper isn't getting the job done, its only processign the debris. I think that is different to the intentions of the statement that refers to highway hedgetrimming by tractor usign red diesel? Maintenace of hedges and trees along a highway is part of agricultural work, you can't include tree surgery at mrs miggins' house just because its next to a road, thats not the same thing. Of course you can run your mog on red because for whatever reason you want, and I'm not sayign you can't, I'm just statign my understanding of the initial posting as it was intended by the pen pusher who wrote it (not the poster, the Customs penpusher)
  10. Yep "Apparently" the lean had increased recently. . I don't know if it had or not. I was only referring to what I had been told. Don't forget that I have no involvment in decision making, or diagnosis etc. its not my field. I was never asked for my opinion so I never gave it. Too many opinions in this industry as it is sometimes.
  11. cutting hedges or trees bordering public roads or bordering verges which border public roads. It seems clear to me that this means when the vehicle in question is cutting trees or hedges, i.e. a tractor with a hedgeflail driving on the highway cuttign hedges that border said highway is fine using red diesel. It does not mean that jonny tree surgeon can use a mog to clear up the debris from tree work done by chainsaws just because the trees happen to be alongside a highwway. In that instance the mog is not doign the work, its merely taking away the debris, which as I understand it, is goods so red is not allowed.
  12. What recent movement would that be??
  13. I've noticed more effect from this in the past on trees that we have thinned or removed limbs from. The next strong bout of wind can rip them to pieces where one limb may have previously protected the next in line. Same with Cedars and snow! One limb eventually fails after excessive snow and the following year the next limb gets the snow when it had never done so before and doesn't stand a chance and so on till no Cedar tree left. Anyway, the owner of the nextdoor beech tree is doing the right thing and having an independant survey, which I'm sure will take into account the removal of this one.
  14. Hi. I don't think that one was taken into consideration when permission was granted. It is in neighbouring property and is going to be surveyed soon, may have already been done. Neither tree protects the other from the prevailing wind as it comes side on to both, and I would have been more concerned about removal of that tree in leaving the one we just felled TBH.
  15. Er, 17 man days, not sure how many hours each day as I don't tend to count little things like that. I spent a lot of time traveling with woodchip or logs and sometimes that was outside of normal workign hours and sometimes within. I only had a bout 4 hours climbing on the 4 rigging days, and a couple of hours chogging down before the fell. If I could have done it differently I would have spent all day climbing and had more vehicles/drivers taking stuff away so that I didn't have to, but thats just how it goes.
  16. The last bit......... [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zuybhoCGgKo]YouTube - Beech rigging felling Butt.wmv[/ame]
  17. I make that up to £1294.00 per year !!
  18. Rupe

    Dead welly

You didn't look nervous at all Pete!! Good job.
  19. where all the rakings and hedge trimmings go, they are then transported by a licenced waste carrier to a licenced waste transfer station where they are composted. Ha Ha! Me too!
  20. Shame he ended up with a numpty this time then! The client had one quote, just over half mine and he threw it in the bin cos he figured they didn't know what they were doing! I like clients with a bit of nous! (nowse?) He's actually a retired chartered forester so he knows far more about trees than me. If he wants it out and the council agree then no worries.
  21. Yes, of course we should be able to.
  22. I have a lot of "marketing experts" in my family/friends and the things they say I should do makes me quite angry. To the point of not wanting to discuss any aspects of my business with some of them. Morals don't seem to come in it.
  23. Again I agree with you Dean in your intention, BUT logfires and woodburners are not "commercial waste" and that is the big difference. We can't burn what we have been paid to remove.
  24. I agree with Dean about not using companies that have to chase after me, but the majority of people aren't that clever. The majority of tv advertising is a con, yet they all flourish from it. During the snow I watch a bit more daytime tv than usual! Every add was "what if your boiler breaks down" or what if your car warranty runs out" or "what if you can't afford you own funeral" etc. etc. etc. just give us some money every month and it will all be ok!! This is advertising stuff that peolpe don't need, yet they still buy into it. If you advertise directly to people who actually do need your product then you are onto a winner, and chasing planning applicants is probably as easy as it gets. Still bad though!
  25. You beat me to it!
