Exactly!! Paperwork doesn't mean anything. But the police are not going to arrest you for not havign a rescuer present. Sounds like you should get another job though!

If its your job, just get on with it. There is no "law" saying you have to have a rescuer. When you die up the tree you have no employer to blame so its fine. One more for the darwin award, and a good laugh for everyone else.

But, I agree, the price should be sufficient to employ suitable staff, rescuers or not, anythign else is just undercutting those that do stick to the HSE and employment guidelines.

There is no law that you need a rescuer on site!
  5. I only do a small amount, and only for the village where my yard is, so 1 mile is the furthest. I have 4 customers in the lane that I can deliver to using the quad bike as I'm not even going on the main road.
  6. Because when I work there is plenty of time left each day for hide and seek!
  7. Now that I have NPTC's etc I know exactly waht I can't do and when to do it anyway. Old and new combined is a good mix. I am a new school technical climber, but you don't want to see me at work hidden in a back garden!
  8. I was a better climber 15 years ago before I did any tickets than I am now. But back then all climbers were good or unemployed, maybe now people get work with all their tickets but staying in a job through recession is unlikely unless you are up to scratch!
  9. There is probably an upper limit for any item, usually called MRRP, so as long as the more expensive product is that price then it just means the other is dicounted, maybe they ordered too many? I'm discounted when I'm not very busy!
  10. Your local stihl dealer probably doesn't buy them from stihl. Only very large dealers can do that.
  11. What, you like guys with balls of steel?? Ok!!

If you are trying to justify it then I wouldn't bother! Yes, you can fit all your climbing kit in and balance saws on top, but they are just for eating lunch in really and having a nap!
  13. Yes, they take a while to change and yo end up battling on with blunt ones rather than changing them. I like the idea of the yellow ones so you can flip them round or change them, but I was under the impression that you couldn't sharpen them as easily, so they are almost disposable. Use twice and replace, but at £6.00 each thats not going to happen!! Does anyone know if I cna fit any green teeth style cutters in to the pockets that vermeer would supply for the yellow jackets?? I think that is what I'm trying to ascertain.
  14. Yep, a 3:1 sytem and grappling hook would work a treat!
  15. You could get just the cross bars and not bother with the side rails, that might look a bit better, and you can add a roller to the rear bar if you want. I just went for the full thing, and TBH the side rail is vital for climbing up and down safely, but it does get in the way when tryign to unlock the roof box.
  16. Only had it on one day so far, but seems ok. We only keep low useage stuff there so won't be going up and down to it all day long. Because of the way I have the chip box (smaller on one side) it means that the old dropside of the truck is still usefull as a hand/foot hold. So grip the drop side, foot on rear wheel then up and grab the side of the roof rack then stend on the drop side while getting stuff out the roof box. Works fine, and if I can't manage it then its time to quite tree work! Would be tricky on yours though with out a little ladder.
  17. I think I'm going to try a small patch next year and see what happens.
  18. Can anyone suggest any methods of root feeding for these trees? We think that they might be struggling a bit this year,I'm sure weather is a factor but this location always gets rain if there is any about. The Yews are 106 years old, and probably about time they had a bit of nourishment. I know soem compaines have soil injection machinery but not sure if I want get someone else in. Is ther a way I can do it myself, thats reasonably quick??
  19. You'd be surprised!! Empty its ok, full its ok ish!
  20. Most important thing IMO is to rake the tops off, then trim again, then rake and one final trim.
  21. I've got all Stihl ones, I use the combitool with short pole hedge trimmer attachment for the tops, then we have another combi tool with long pole hedge trimmer for the top edges of the sides. Most of the sides are done with the longest single sided trimmer they make, we have the old style one not the new ones. Then we have a short single sided trimmer for any little awkward bits. So just four trimmers, 3 blokes for two days for the main section, one is full time clearing up moving sheets etc, and 2 blokes for 2 days for the long straight sections.
  22. There are bits where I want to take a foot off the sides, but I advise a 10 year recovery of that and the answer was NO!
  23. Yes, I kind of dread it each year but always proud of the finished product. The Yew hedges in the pictures should take four days, but bad weather can drag it on longer. There is also another day of Laurel hedges (done, not in photos) and a further 2 days still to do of box hedges and more laurels. We have sorted the rates out so that on target is great, one day over shedule is not bad, and only a total screw up will make it a non earner. so that makes it more enjoyable.
  24. No collections of Yew clippings this year which is a shame, I think we got a good couple of tons of these hedges again this year but it will all go on the bonfire. This is the 7th time I've done these and its not getting any easier!!
  25. Strangley, since I put it all on, I have just broken my record for miles per tank of fuel!! That can't be right though, I am expecting a reduction in performance. The ladders wobble at 60-65mph but above that its ok! And thats as colour co ordinated as its going to be! white, orange, black and some metal work. Even the label on the roof rack matches the truck!
