  1. I did a year self employed after I left school on a Local Estate, skidding out and planting, went to college for 2 years ( HND Game and Wildlife Management) then did 9 months felling Birch on the books for a guy who builds racecourse fences, then went on my own contracting, bought the little carraro and the county, started firewooding a bit more and then sold most of my gear and packed in late last year and now work in the wood department on another local estate. at a bit of a crossroads now - either go and start training to climb, go driving forwarders or go back Felling sefl employed. That's just short of 8 years it don't feel like it though !
  2. I love the look on peoples faces when you squeeze a 130 through a gap someone else struggled to get their 90 or disco through I've often thought the long wheelbase is a good thing off road, going down steep hills it's so much more stable and being longer takes a lot before it picks a wheel up I love my 130, it's gonna pain me to see it go but needs must and all that. I do like your 6x6:icon14: Arborworks
  3. it was only a couple of years ago that £15 a tonne at roadside was the going rate around us - I always figured it was better off going in my shed and getting sold as logs I tried wherever possible to go straight to the top - deal with the Estate owner rather than the typical* agent/manager with their spraycans and degrees in tree marking. * there are exceptions to this stereotype ocasionally lol
  4. As others have said, if they're going into plastic bags they want to be bone dry otherwise they sweat and go mouldy (and even rot in some cases) I'm all for splitting over the summer as you can almost watch them dry out.
  5. He's dreaming - but no doubt some numpty will think it's a bargain
  6. I was talking to a bloke the other day and he's paying £8 a tonne STANDING Up until last year I'd never payed more than £1 a tonne (and then it was more of a token gesture!) Nice straightish hardwood thinnings up to around 12 inch diameter will get you the most ££ at roadside - it's getting up to and past the £25 a tonne mark now and that's before haulage @ £10 a tonne average
  7. That's patterdales for you
  8. Nope, I picked up a dropside body off ebay a bit back and never got round to doing anything with it. Bit of a change in circumstances have meant that I don't use the 130 much now. It's going to get a few jobs done at it and then it'll be ready for sale.
  9. Reckon it'd be better for pulling trees over than skidding - F.......lipping big winch though
  10. Yep, mainly arborists lol
  11. I want one of those just for that reason
  12. It's always the same though, you don't know what you had till it's been sold
  13. Yes thanks, sorry not been in touch - it's been mental at the mo Hoping to start putting new big ends and main bearings in the 110 this weekend and get it ready for testing, 130 needs a bit replacing on transfer linkage and then to cap it off the disco snapped an alternator belt yesterday
  14. Looking good It's helping spur me on to get mine sorted - they all have little jobs need doing
  15. A mog is a tractor until it carries a load - tractors are tool carriers and towing machines, apparently
  16. Here's mine - it's going to be up for sale very soon too either as is or with the body chopped off ready for a tipper - pm me if anyone's interested in it. Haven't got any pictures of the 110 yet, it's still sat in the sawmill yard at work until I've room at home
  17. I'd never had anything to do with alder up until a couple of years back. Wasn't looking forward to "being stuck with it" as I just assumed it would be like willow. As Mr Ed says - some of the best firewood I've ever had (once it's dry). Make sure you stack it off the ground slightly though cos it goes mushy fairly quickly.
  18. Never thought of it like that - good point though
  19. Hi
  20. I'm a no too.
  21. I have  was my own fault though, tried dipping the ol on the tractor when it was running, it caught on something and ended up three inches shorter
  22. I've been robbed
  23. Yep - Quite a trail of unpaid bills (mine included) - It was me that ended up stuck helping him out on that last job he did at Guisborough just before he dropped off the map completely. That's partly why I had to sell my County and get a "normal" job. Nope we've not met, I just thought I recognised your 130 from something martin had said when I was looking at buying mine
  24. Liking the sound of that
