  1. The issue of updates will only be relevant post accident or incident. The investigators (either insurance , HSE or both) will have plenty to say if they are not in place.

It can easily be done by either a days training or achievement of further units. Not bad every 5 years compared to a lot of industries

Well that's how this came to light, one of the lads dropped a tree on the overheads

  2. On the self employed front, can you not do an additional module that incorporates saw use and that should suffice as refresher training? You have to pay, so might as well get something out of it.

For example if you haven't done cs41 as a climber then it incorporates all the other climbing and aerial cutting aspects. Plus you get to charge more on your day rate.

Ill look into that but knowing this company probably not!

  3. Alrite guys this a bit of a long story but here goes. There's a few of us who work for an agency, and a working at a major company, we've just been told that those that have had the chainsaw tickets 5 years or longer will need to go on a 3 day refresher, for which we'll have to pay 250 plus not be paid, now some of us are paye and some are "self employed" (yes I know the issues about self employed, no need to point them out :). )

So the question is, is there any law that can help us out? Effectively it's going to cost 550 to get a refresher for something that's for life. Any help much appreciated cheers mike

  4. It's really not as much work as you think it will be before you start - if you're having engine out and swapping bulkhead, there's not a huge amount of big bits left.

Did mine on the drive with nowt more complex than a pair of high lifts, a pair of bottle jacks, an engine crane once the body was off and a good stack of blocks of wood.

That's what's making me think, now I've got those out, looking at it I'm half way to doing the chassis too, currently checking prices out, so I'll see.

Did you have help Chris? Thing I'm finding since my dad died is even the easiest jobs is a hassle on your own, removing the the screen for example, doesn't weigh much but still needs two to remove it in one piece!

  5. I wouldn't be too fussed about synthetic or wire, apart from the weight issue, there's a lot of hype about steel rope, and in this work I'd much prefer steel.

In posts like these I always say Superwinch husky, it's slow, been around since Jesus and bulletproof.

  6. Hi anyone heard of this, generator at work was difficult to pull, so got asked to look at it, apparently it started but smoked then stopped. Anyway had a quick look and the pull start was very stiff as it went through compression could hear a squishing, so thought the cylinder was full of oil. But had a look at the oil level/stick and when I undid it petrol literally poured out. Any ideas? Seems to me the petrol is literally running from the tank into the cylinder. It's a hire machine so ill never know the reason just interested

  7. To be honest not found much difference on the quality - though they fade really fast. Its the price of Stretch Air , up to now theyve been the only manufacturers that did class 2 and are gort rated - got some stihls for £160 instead of £250 for stretch

So wich have you bought? The hiflex ones or the normal stihl ones?

  8. What have you found to be wrong with them ? . I bought a pair of hi viz orange trousers when they first came out and found the fabric to be far less durable than the ordinary trousers ! when i inquired i was told that it was because of the chemical process the material undergoes to actually get to the orange/ yellow .

That's possibly true, though I'm not sure its entirely the material at fault, mine always go along the crotch seems, as if the stitching weakens the seam. The last set only managed about 6 months before failing there, they normally fail climbing over fences. It wouldn't be so bad if they didn't charge a premium for them!

  9. I know this is a flammable topic and I'm about to make an inflammatory comment but Hi-flex aren't worth the money.

    They don't last long enough.

Well I've had enough of paying 250 for stretch airs, they can't be any worse than those, and I like my black hiflex, fit me nice too.
