  1. I had a Harkie in my old job, while it was waterproof and quite nice to wear, I didn't half sweat in it, I'd liken it to the cheap waterproof trousers you get where the sweat stays inside and you end up stinking and damp. I'd get another for bad weather but not for the price they cost

  2. It's not too late to sort it if you want to sell the motor and keep the buyer happy. So often the problem is a lack of communication. I bet if the two of you had spoken to each other then you would have had a happy outcome, or if he was dodgy then you would have got a feel for what was going on. I wouldn't say you were out of line, or bang out of order - obviously just worried about losing out. But I do think it could have been handled a bit differently, perhaps by letting the buyer know of your concerns before rejecting the PayPal payment.

Exactly, the way I was bought up £800 is an awful lot of money and not something I'm prepared to lose, I did email him twice saying I'd rather not have PayPal.

  3. Think you have been very hasty here!

I'd be pissed off if I were the buyer...

Possibly so but I'd rather he be pissed off than me spend the next month or so worrying incase he claims. I've seen lots of auctions that have stated collection only, and people have asked a question if it was ok to send a courier he could of done the same, and I'd of said no. Simple as that.

Like I said before, my only concern is I sell the car, no problems. Quite why I'm "bang out of order" is beyond me, the only person to lose out in all this is me.

If anyone has some constructive advice then feel free to post but don't bother posting "bang out of order" or "your out of line" as I'm not interested, anyone would think I've been doing the conning

  4. What's that got to do with it?

He didn't collect in person he sorted a courier, he did pay by PayPal, he did pay quick, even by a good buyer payment can be slow.

He has arranged courier so there is your proof that the item has (or not in this case!) been collected and sent as courier will give you docs that say they have collected.

So you would be happy if he came all the way over here to collect in person and spend a fortune on travel then drive the car back? Does this make sense to anyone else because in my world it doesn't and is cheaper to get a company to do it.

You really should have clearly specified in you description NO OVERSEAS BUYERS PLEASE. It's simple and eliminates a lot.

I'm out on this one I know what it feels like to get messed around by an international buyer and I will always put no international on any listing I do now unless it is a small item.

I'm sticking with saying ou have been hasty with this buyer and not given him much of a chance to deal with anything.

Have you read my last post? It says that there has to be online proof that the car was shipped/picked up for PayPal in the event of a dispute

  5. So a bit more on google has found out that collection in person and payment via PayPal isnt recommended. This is because of the following scenario,

"Some guy sends you an e-mail about collecting the item in person to save on postage fees and you say that's OK.

He then hits the Buy Now button and pays for the item with Paypal. You are delighted because you have sold your laptop.

Two days later after a few e-mails back and forth to arrange a collection day/time the buyer turns up, tries out the laptop, shakes your hand and then disappears from your life. For about a week.

That's when you get an e-mail from Paypal saying that the buyer wants to know where his laptop is?

You write back saying that the buyer came to collect the laptop in person but that means nothing to Paypal.

You could provide a document signed by the buyer and a solicitor saying that the buyer collected the laptop and it wouldn't mean a thing.

All that Paypal are interested in is that you must be able to provide the tracking number from the receipt that you got from the Post office.

Without that, Paypal will 100% certainly refund the buyer the money that he paid for the laptop and there is nothing that you can do about it.

So then you decide to visit the buyer with a few friends armed with baseball bats and ski masks, ...... but where do you go? You have no idea where the dodgy buyer lives and the eBay ID that he used was probably created just for your laptop with bogus details.

Moral of the story .... NEVER accept Paypal for a Cash on Collection deal."

That's taken from the eBay guide pages.

  6. Out of interest what do people make of this statement?

Now there comes the question of payment. PayPal and collect is dangerous as the seller will not have a delivery receipt if the payment is fraudulent and may well refuse which he is entitled to do. Do not expect to arrive with a cheque and take the goods away, it won’t happen. Sellers need cleared funds before releasing goods.

  7. Oh did anyone actually know there is a way to get the sellers or buyers personal info, like address real name and telephone number, on eBay. It is legal and you can get it.

Let us in on the secret then, the buyers details come up on the confirmation email, I presume there's another way?

  8. People always complain about dodgy buyers, but it cuts both ways.

Bit like "rouge traders" what about all the rouge customers???:sneaky2:

He is having it "collected in person" by his "representative"

Personally I think your out of line.

I don't agree, collection in person is exactly that, what he is doing is having a "courier" pick it up.

  9. Well I emailed him today apologised and said I wasn't happy with the deal and offered a full refund, then I opened a case to cancel the purchase through eBay. He's rejected it and sent the following

Hi, i am disapointed with your manners and i have already contacted ebay to make you an official complaint, also you tried to make me pay you outside paypal regulations note that i also have your emails saved to prove it to ebay about your behaviour

The deal stands and i will notify you with instructions from my shipper

    Joe

    - brimbo-joe

so I replied back and said he hadn't complied with the listing as he wasn't collecting in person.

Quite what he thinks is going to happen now I'm not sure! Is he expecting me to say ok and still sell it him? Sounds like he may of been genuine though. Either way he's not getting it.

  10. Mike, how about you call the freight forwarder so you know who you're speaking to, and confirm if they are expecting the vehicle? Looks like it's Alymed Freight Alymed - Freight Forwarders in Northampton NN5 5JR - 192.com

Yeah I will cheers a quick google for alymed came up with nothing except for the 192 website, seems a little odd to me they have no website etc,

The lowest bidder is a guy from Blackpool, he offered me 800 quid for it during the auction but I let it run.

Maybe I am being too cautious

  11. In his email to you on the first page he has signed it 'joe' but on his address its manuel.:confused1:

That for me is enough to make me suspicious, but i always am about things like this. I would try to speak to him and the shipping agent, and make sure you are there when the its picked up.

I think you are right to have doubts, £800 is alot of cash to be flippant about and be all trusty and pally with a guy you have never met living hundreds of miles away.:thumbup1:

Never even noticed that mate, I've emailed him for a number to ring him on, so I'll see if he comes up with one

  12. People get a grip.

The way conmen operate is to get you to pay them money, they don't chuck 800 plus fees at you in the hope that they can bag some money back after paying shipping and import fees to a foreign land.

Mike, if you didn't want to use PayPal you should have specified that in the listing, same goes with overseas bidders, you didn't and this chap has bought the car in good faith, as long as your description is accurate you won't have any problems. Document the condition of the vehicle before it leaves in case it gets damaged in transit.

The thing is you have to,offer PayPal as a payment by eBay rules.

  13. They are an hour ahead - still looks OK to me, does anyone actually know of a scammer paying in full and reimbursing Paypal fees???

For the record, you can stop international buyers when you set up your listing:blushing:

I definitely wil be blocking the, next time.

Don't know of it happening but, that's why it's a con(fidence) trick? Though it does seem to be a lot of trouble for 800 quid?

I've google mapped the "shipping" agent and it just comes up on an industrial estate, but I can't find anything about the buyers address in Malta it's,

    manuel camilleri

    6,independence square victoria gozo

    victoria, malta vct 1022 Malta

If anyone can help with that, cheers for the advice here guys

  14. The PayPal bit that bothers me, is this.....

While they won't take money directly from your bank account without your agreement, one of the things that you specifically agree to when setting up a PayPal account is to "reimburse PayPal through other means". See:

"Reimbursement for Your Liability. In the event you are liable for any amounts owed to PayPal, PayPal may immediately remove such amounts from your Balance (if available). If there are insufficient funds in your Balance to cover your liability, PayPal reserves the right to collect your debt to PayPal by using any payments received in your Account and otherwise you agree to reimburse PayPal through other means. PayPal may also recover amounts you owe us through legal means, including, without limitation, through the use of a debt collection agency."

It strikes me that you are agreeing for PayPal to be reimbursed "through other means" if there are no funds in your PayPal account, and those "other means" could well be through debiting your bank account as per the direct debit agreement.

I still don't think your buyer is dodgy, but I think PayPal cover themselves well!

Yep I don't know the ins and outs but if I'd of asked the same question but it had been a bank transfer, I bet most would of said avoid?

I emailed him a couple of hours back about who the shipping agent was but no answer yet, maybe it's nighttime there?

  15. Did you see what mike was selling?:001_smile:

I was apprehensive when I sold the pinin to a romanian but all worked out fine, unlike the first English **** who did not understand that it was an auction.

What you tryin to say about my classic motor? Haha

  16. Glad someone else agrees - found the Maltese people very friendly when I went out there a few years ago - they like the English and all our old cars and buses - we helped them in WW2 - quite a history there - read about "Faith Hope and Charity" three Gloster Gladiators we lent them to defend the Island!

Oh good so there's no crime in Malta? I'll go move there then

  17. I'm a bit bewildered on this.

So he is from Malta! So what! It's eBay? How many items have you brought from other countries on eBay before? It's a global market and has opened opertunities that wasn't available before.

He has paid you and you have the money. He has arranged shipping and collection. All you have to do is make sure you are there to hand it over.

He has added the extra for fees so you are covered on that front. More than most would do.

Sorry to say it but if you didn't want to pay PayPal for using there service that IMO is the best out there then don't sell on eBay or use PayPal. What so you want to sell stuff for free and not pay for it?

Sorry if that bit sounds blunt but it sounds like you are having a go at PayPal because you are having to pay for using a service that allows people to sell to international buyers with very little trouble, and in a safe manner.....

Yep I've bought stuff from overseas, never bought a car from overseas though, have you?

It doesn't matter if he's covered the fees or not does it, if it's a con he'll get them back anyway!

You do realise eBay charge for selling right? So as well as the listing fee and the final value fee which is about 45 quid all in, I'm hardly selling stuff for free!

Read up on sellers on eBay that have had problems and lost out. Then read up on the bank transfer scam that goes on and you may get an idea why I'm apprehensive about losing my money/car

  18. Please explain how they take that money back out of your bank ac because as far as can see its ni on impossible or everyone would be opening disputes up to get there money and keep the goods

PayPal do it by putting your account into negative so if I transferred the 800 quid to my bank, the buyer disputed and PayPal refunded my PayPal would be minus 800 so I'd owe PayPal 800 quid, think that's it

  19. Not quite. Ebay and PayPal stack things very much against the seller if the buyer disputes something.

Yep there loads on the net about sellers being ripped off.

Was just ringing PayPal to see what rights I've got exactly, if they say none, then it's decided!
