  2. I would recommend the OP speaks to an NPTC assessor for accurate advice and guidance 👍
  3. This survey is for an MA……seriously??? I would be resubmitting this back to a student at level 2/3 without hesitation, for many of the reasons already mentioned above. For all such research work never forget that Garbage in = Garbage out, sorry Ryan I won’t be helping you with this version.
  4. For over 15yrs i have complied with the WHAR.....it has not changed or been amended yet we have had an industry storm in a tea cup......how did i do it?.......by reading the WAHR(2005)..... A rope access or positioning technique shall be used only if— (a) it involves a system comprising at least two separately anchored lines, of which one (“the working line”) is used as a means of access, egress and support and the other is the safety line; AND THEN..... 3.The system may comprise a single rope where— (a) a risk assessment has demonstrated that the use of a second line would entail higher risk to persons; and (b) appropriate measures have been taken to ensure safety. Nothing has changed except the rhetoric......it's not hard to work out how to exercise compliance and common sense 👍
  5. Between 1999 and 2005……I don’t know the exact date
  6. In this case it would be the FASTCo days.......pre NPTC 👍
  7. Yep, tried that m8, no sign of FASTCo guidance per se’…..lots of references but no documents.
  8. I am researching an aspect of climbing for a research paper and was wondering if anyone has copies AA climbing guides or FASTCo 401 from back in the day?, it would be good to get some comparison data. Please pass this on if you know some else who may have some...... Mucho Gracias
  9. There is a certain group in society who have an 'us and them'/'wolf and sheep' way of life........they will nick ANYTHING from ANYONE without remorse.......trust your instincts and do something.............
  10. Huge naval figureheads rescued from obscurity to go on display in UK | UK news | The Guardian WWW.THEGUARDIAN.COM Thirteen wooden figures that once adorned warships have been hung from the ceiling of a new Plymouth museum All done ?
  11. Hi Liam, this is a very common question when a course starts, try not to think only how deep to go but also where to start, that’s the key...... I would guess your first unit is soil science and the first question is something like ‘How is soil formed’........start at the beginning.....a land of bare rock with no soil....how does soil begin to form, what are the main rock constituents, how are the bare rocks broken down, what is organic matter, how does it appear and what is it’s role in soil formation, explain its effects on the soil and explain the terms aggregates, texture and structure, also identify the horizons found in soil from the O horizon down to parent rock, At the end of an assignment you should be able to read your work and answer the question without any questions arising from what you’ve written. One of the primary differences in levels is the wording of the question, this prescriptively guides the depth of your answer. Level 2 isn’t easy if that’s the level your reaching for, just watch the wording used in the questions, justify, explain, list, describe.......these will guide you on what depth you need to go.....good luck m8....enjoy the journey
  12. Yes I did and chucked the stake away, the stem was wider than the stake.....honestly this kind of thing really p*sses me off, I probably release more than a hundred a year.....free the trees!!!!
  13. A London plane in London......unreal....all the effort to plant no effort in establishment and after care..... FFS
  14. Yep I also think it is a rare scenario hence my interest, I have sent enquiries to subsidence and home insurance companies who specialise (or claim to) in underpinning but no responses yet, I’ve also put a few of my TO friends on the scent, now I’ll wait to hear.......
  15. I am looking into examples where engineering solutions have been employed (underpinning/ piling e.t.c.) as opposed to removing a tree that has caused subsidence. I would be interested to hear from any members who have been involved in cases like this, information seems quite hard to come by........ ‘Thanks in advance ?
  16. Anyone doing this should bear in mind the legal aspects of having an unqualified person using a chainsaw from a rope and harness, IF something went wrong HSE would be looking for reasons why it was happening, if it was ‘to gain experience ‘ would a working site be seen as suitable environment, does the trainee hold any relevant quali's - having CS39 will not cover the training of someone with no quail's, was the MAXIMUM ppe and /or safest equipment used and many other things...... but if nothing goes wrong then no one will know ?
  17. The ABC L2 is a great course and you will learn a lot of stuff that will give you a greater understanding of how trees grow and develop - as well as a lot of industry best practice and legislations. The RFS L2 is now known as the ABC L2 ( ABC= Awards Body Consortium) so it’s basically a rebrand...... think snickers and marathon ??

    Clinometer?

I’ve been measuring tree heights for donkeys and have found that the laser equipment is the most innacurate no matter how much it costs, more often than not it picks up the outer canopy and not the top of the tree. Try one 3 times on the same tree from 3 different directions and the chances are you’ll get 3 different readings!! Great for telegraph poles and buildings though. A manual clinometer is the most reliable but I can usually get +/- 1M or so by eye, if you can visualise 2 meters accurately you’ll soon get the hang of it.
  19. X2!!! I was always told it's expensive in Norway but until you’ve been there you have no idea how eye wateringly expensive ??
  20. It depends m8, you will def need your p.t.i. and depending on your current level of knowledge you may need to start with the basic tree inspection course. Be wary though, as a tree surveyor you will be expected to know and understand a wide range of tree ident, pest and disease (identification, life cycle, impact on tree health and risk ratings e.t.c.), bio mechanics, current legislations, make and record observations using current databases and understand the impact of your recommendations on the future health/maintenance program of each tree. Plus much more......... It is a common view that tree surveying is a good way to spend your golden years after a lifetime of climbing. IMHO 5-10 years of climbing should be a pre-requisit to being a surveyor, the knowledge and understanding of what is appropriate and achievable take a long time to develop. I would suggest that most credible companies would want all the above with at least a full level 4 diploma if not level 6, some of your decisions can have fatal and/or VERY expensive outcomes and if you cannot justify your recommendations in court your in deep deep doodoo....... I don’t want to rain on your parade but I have seen people come in as a surveyor and leave in short time as they had no real grasp on the knowledge needed and the scope of the job role. Good luck with your decision m8.
  21. ......And your level 2&3 English, and your level 2&3maths, and compile a portfolio of evidence, and take tickets whether you want them or not, and attend training and undergo summative assessments, and take and end point assessment...... sometimes the Arb bit gets lost in the Qualifaction/funding whirlpool...... if you can find a good local employer who will take you on and focus on the tickets you and they want in your own time you can save yourself a lot of grief and be earning more money more quickly....
  22. Dave, they had no surviving records of their construction so the timber used was unknown. There was definitely oak in there and pine but the central decay was quite extensive. Some awesome joinery skills though!, they were all hand carved in sections and connected without any nails or screws. They are now being dismantled for full restoration, destined to take a prominent place in Plymouth's new naval museum I believe.
