1. The pictures seems very good to me. Sharp!...Good stuff on getting the G11. I could not put my G10 down for the first few weeks. There is a load of functions that I have not got around to play with fully but really happy with the results I have been getting. Not much to add but I like to sometimes grab the focal point from the centre of the shot and with the button semi pressed down move the camera to move the focal point to other areas of the shot. Sorry if this sounds a bit confusing but worth playing around with. Cheers Steve
2. Hi thanks for the replies and its all helping me gain a better grasp of QTRA. I have a potential piece of work coming up and I am keen to carry it out under the QTRA methodology. As bundles 2 states I do not want to misapply the methodology and so I am getting myself up to speed. Also I feel ok with estimating targets value and size of the hazard. It giving the value for the potential of failure seems like the tricky bit. High values from 1/1 to 1/100 seems ok to estimated but when you get below that I am struggling to make a estimation. Any help with this and examples would be much appreciated. Also I have been on the QTRA forum since the course last summer but never had to be a power user of it until possibility now. I will have a trawl through the threads. Thanks. Steve
3. Hi If you check the QTRA discussion group I used it a few days ago. I was interested in this example in thread regarding 1/10,000 with 10,000 trees as I got it completely wrong. I am keen to read about other examples to help me think further about probability.
4. hi do not mean to side track this. I attend the QTRA course last year and have used it a little since. I am trying to get up to speed with my QTRA experience and I am looking for a few examples for me to think about and work through. Anyone got a few for me? Thanks Steve
5. hi thanks for all the replies..... Yes I am willing to travel and no a don't run a land rover. Cheers Steve

9. Thanks!..the climbing pictures I have published on UKClimbing.com with some good feedback….i will try to keep with the theme of this website and upload tree related pictures as I do not want to fill the website up with rock climbing pictures….the route is on Trial Wall situated in Rhossli on the Gower - South Wales. The route is called Crime and Punishment and is E5 6b in old money but a few cheeky bolts have made it a mix of bold sports and traditional gear so weighing in at a sports grade of around French 7a+. This is way above what I lead at the moment! I traded in my fairly new Sony Cybershot (I think it was something like the DSC-W55 or similar). I brought it for the Vulture work and was pretty pleased with the results. On that note I have been waiting to hear back if I am required to help out this year but I think things may not be going to plan. Cheers Steve
10. hey this must be my day…. not only do I get a few compliments on my tree surgery but also on my photos….many thanks! Ok G10 are still kicking around for around £350-400. G11 are about £100 more. My take on it is that for the sort of pictures we will be taking up or around trees in good light etc then the G10 is pretty much as good as they get in the compact range. There is other Canon lens such as telephoto than can be used with the G10 if required. If you can pick up a G10 over the next few months then I would go for it. I managed to part ex my old Sony camera in that saved a bit. Also a couple of shot from a few weeks ago….it does not show how cold it was!!
11. hi.... do not mean to butt in but I have just purchased a Canon G10 compact camera. I am really pleased with it and as compacts go it one of the best all rounder with a good scope for macro work. I think the G10 is not the best in low light levels but the G11 if you want to spend more is more set up for this. Check out the attached reduced quaility pictures, what do you think??
12. hi I think the Hornet Moth larva leave a 8mm hole and are kicking around for 2 years in the wood....i would have thought u would have seen one in the galleries?I am no expert but Hornet Moth sounds about right.
13. Hi to reiterate what others are saying the tree life course made all the difference for me to pass the tech cert . I found the tree life course tough and really made me aware of the areas I need to work hard in. Also If your interested I have a few good BS5837 reports I can email you? In the tree condition exam a proportion of the marks is for the report structure. I think if you get that done and survey half the trees well u may pass. But don’t quote me on it! Goodluck steve
14. hi, I am thinking of learning to use some AutoCAD software for BS5837 surveys etc. What do most people use? ArborCAD – AE ? Any opinions welcome. Thanks Steve
15. Heterobassidion annosum - spore surface. sorry no common name known to me. this is great! hope this is going to be a regular thing? also I have heard Heterobasidion annosum called by a common name of Conifer-base polypore, anyone else heard this? cheers steve

20. Morning, thanks for the replies. OK the stem injection is going to be used on a nature reserve and I believe in the past they have used stem injection for control over rhod and sycamore. I think they use a system of drilling and injecting into the stems. I have CS 40 but not PA1+6 but I know and man who does. Cheers steve
21. Hi, I was wondering what qualification you need to carry out stem injections of glyphosate into trees and shrubs.? Thanks Steve
22. Hi, great news everyone! Thanks for everyone’s help on this forum as I too have just found out that I have achieved the award and I am really pleased! I can honestly say this is one of the hardest things I have every done and the pressures and level of this award I found greater than my degree course. Good work everyone and I really proud to have gained this award. As for this award people in this Industry know the weight it holds! Also I am sure the 3 day Tree Life course made all the difference. Cheers Steve
