The day the election results came in I had an incredibly profound conversation with my 6yr old. In trying to convey the significance of what was occuring (ie, the first black American President) it dawned on me for the first time that, at 6yrs old, she had no comprehension of the relevance of skin colour. "What is black?" she asked me. No idea what-so-ever that she has white skin and the priviledges that go along with that, on the whole. I tried in vain to help her understand but she looked at me, puzzled. This conversation stayed with me all day and it occurred to me that perhaps, we are at our most wise when we are children. God bless all those who laid down their lives for a better future, whether they wanted to or not.

Sounds like fun to me. I guess what I was really getting at was more...do you wait with baited breath for storm damage to clear up? Do you look forward to some poor sod's tree falling over in the wind? that sort of thing... This weekends gales down this way just got me wondering.

My girl is nearly 7 and her name is Sadie Willow. She's been able to spot a Willow tree from miles off since she was about 3! Can't get her anywhere near to climb tho- too dirty, she reckons. I'll make her tomboy out of her yet!
