TVI.... I continue to be educated and captivated by this topic. It's made me realise just how much of some of our woodland in East Sussex has been mis-managed over the years. You and others like you should be managing the management of woodland.(If you see what I mean !). But here's the rub......if you and your ilk are not on the shop floor(so to speak) then without that enthusiasm, dedication and knowledge (empirical or otherwise) then it's doomed to failure. Quis custodiet ipsos custodes Your work ethic, philosophy and thought processes are deserving as a business model for others, not necessarily in Arb !

Absolutely Fiver. Each to their own. As mine are generally working 4/5/6 days a week, mainly dogging back in all sorts of terrain, beating in big woods and picking up on wood/cattle ground and since my mobility is now quite limited and I require use of a vehicle(s) to get about, the way I work and use my dogs has changed drastically over the last four years. I really need them to use their own nouse and need to let them get on with it. Bearing in mind I still need to keep that control and manners on shoot days. They've stepped up admirably, but that goes to the basics way back and the confidence that they have in me and I in them. Had Gran and Mum not been there the "Pup" would definitely have been a problem dog. Very intelligent and quick as a heat seeking whippet ! But a lovely little soul and she does so want to please. It's, due to circumstances, taken a lot longer but as Granny drops off a pace and just toodles around she is now really coming to the fore. They are honest and behave on shoot days and carry out their tasks well, We all happy ? This really does seem like a conversation we should all be having over a few pints ?

Pretty much same as. Three for return, two for attention with hand signal if necessary and one for stop/sit. As you Acme, 210, 210 1/2, 211 1/2. Mind when I've found the right whistle for the right dog events have usually unfolded and it's too late ?

I'm interested that you're using two whistles, I did that many ,many, many years ago. I fear that it would be somewhat impractical with three of them. The possibilities of self strangulation would be high !

Cracking little dog fiver, pleased to see that you're back out in the field Mr Bolam and Stubby how true that is. I've got Springers 6,7 and 8 at the moment (Pup 4yrs, Mum 9yrs and Granny aka "Doris" 13 yrs). Everyone has been brought up and trained differently but around the same theme. Their aim in life is to make me happy, mine to make sure that they're happy (if that makes any sense ! ) To me field work is more about harnessing natural ability than training coupled with basic obedience. Everyone trains there dogs differently, but I firmly believe that when things go wrong (as they will !) chastisement should only ever be verbal not the "come here you black and white tw@t", at the top of your voice but a change of tone and calming down period after said event. To finish on a high note, circumstances permitting is a given ! I could rattle on for hours about Spaniels and their character and how I adapted to them. Note "How I Adapted To Them." To get the best out of them in the task of the day, to give them the maximum enjoyment is to make me happy and satisfied. At the end of the day, each to their own regarding training but I can say without any fear of contradiction that my dogs love their life and what they do ?
