  1. Look up how the latin name has been derived. Aesculus x carnea - carnea means red , Red horsechestnut. It all helps you to remember both names. Ilex aquifolium - wavy leaves (aqui- water derived, waves. folium - foliage) Describes holy leaves perfectly.
  2. Personally I find the latin names easier as they are descriptive, and you can sometimes work them out. If of course you know what the latin names mean. Hiller "Plant Names Explained", is a good read.
  3. Just wondering what size teams everyone works in. I know it may be different for each job, but generally for say a dismantle to include lowering.
  4. What are the other 24?
  5. A good tip is to learn the differences between similar species. Look at Quercus petraea as this is the tree you will confuse for Q. robur, these two hybridise to add further confusion.
  6. Become a LANTRA instructor, many hoops to jump through and expensive.
  7. Yep, carry it around on the trailer to comply with Welfare at Work Regs.
  8. Todays job crown reduction on an ash.
  9. The post is for someone to become lead climber over 2 to 4 years. The yard is near Haverfordwest. We would welcome experienced climbers to be able to fill shoes straight away. Sorry for confusion.
  10. The company that I work for are looking for someone to become our lead climber. It would be an ideal post for someone who has finished their college course and has the basic skills. Interest in the job is essential and on going training will be made available to help candidates become fully proficient. Help will be given to gain academic qualifications (RFS/ ISA Cert). The company is based in South West Wales, we plan to become AA Approved within the next few months so being able to work to a high standard is needed. The company currently employs eight, plus the director who is the Consultant/ driving force. I currently am the lead climber, but have other projects to concentrate on. We have contracts to cover work in bad weather, booked many months in advance. PM me if you are interested. This is an excellent opportunity with good prospects.
  11. Peter, I was using 4 wraps / 3 braids. I've got xtc rope and a beeline 8mm cord. This combo was getting tight after a short climb.
  12. Just been out experimenting. Tried both with and without. My VT does not self tend, do I need less wraps? Works really well with a pantin might try this and no extension. Got the pantin for frog walking SRT, it is much easier than two feet in same loop
  13. I'm changing to HC / VT set up. Is there any benefit in adding a sling/ lanyard to the attachment from harness to HC, so as to give greater distance between the two?
  14. PS they say hi to Alfie.
  15. Thought I'd put my two on, after they disrupted the Welsh TCC.
  16. Dean, what sort of knot are you using to attach your lowering rope to the limb you are cutting off?
  17. I wouldn't dare call myself an arborist untill I could prove that I was. Look in the Yellow pages and there are guys advertising consultancy with just the RFS Cert'. Although this is a good starting point it is a basic qualification. On this note, after reading the UK arborist/ topping thread on the Buzz. Have you noticed how much importance the Yanks give the ISA Certification? Again a basic test (multiple choice to boot). Don't think that I have got anything against Certified Arb's- I am one myself, but don't give it greater worth than it should have. Just my thoughts.
  18. Alex, I have prior commitments on saturday. What time does the climbing start on Sunday?
  19. We have done three huge trees on the same estate in the last few months. These are BIG for this part of the world. There was a turkey at about 100 foot, dismantled and rigged. Also another beech with a large spread rigged then pole felled from 30 feet.
  20. I will post video next week of the tree coming over.
  21. I saw a similar bracket the other day on an oak. It had me perplexed for a while.
  22. I would have liked to leave the buttresses, but I was unsure that the guide bar was long enough to fell without a keyhole cut. 30" on a 066. The tree had a lean in the direction of fell and thought it was a better option.
  23. Pics from Thursdays job. Construction company had dug a trench 1-2m from this line of trees. TO wanted us to do a third reduction to reduce sail area. There is a caravan park the other side of the fence. Eleven trees in total alder and larch.
  24. Two more.
  25. Beech I felled last week. It was loosing branches due to Ganoderma applanatum. We removed two limbs so it would miss surrounding trees.
