  1. I assume some guys on here have done contracts away from home for their companies. What allowance ie money did you get for: a) Food/ accommodation b) any extra for inconvenience? Any input happily received.
  2. Where are you Western?
  3. Arisings is not only a 'trade term', it is plain English!
  4. Unfortunately they would not see it like that. With increased turnover you are more likely to have an accident, if they paid out at all (because you have withheld a material fact) they would be in their rights to pay less than 50%
  5. Your fault for not checking!
  6. For those of us that do not know your two lecturers, we can only go on what jack has said. Incidentally between us we asked him questions before we gave any critique. Jack said the lecturers were impressed, and that he was happy with the cuts 18 stoner et al have given Jack very good feedback on them. If Jack was happy with his cuts then the lecturers did not give him realistic feedback themselves. We can only comment on the information given, the guys who have posted on this thread have a lot of years experience between us so I would suggest we do know what we are talking about. Jack, it was a very good first attempt, but had faults. Keep going like that and you will have good job prospects.
  7. If the tutor is impressed with those cuts and work area he deserves some critisism.
  8. Jack, you will find out in time that even if you have signage cones etc and are wearing hi viz, cars will always get passed any one standing in the road. Just a note of caution
  9. As Hama pointed out no signage etc. Doing it as a hobble I guess you are unlikely to be able to have this equipment. Dont you think it would have been safer to section the tree rather than fell it into the road?
  10. Is that more private work Jack? You have not said anything about the new pics.
  11. I was wondering about the stump, but also the saw dust.
  12. A couple of pics from the groundie.
  13. Will post some pics when I gather them from the guys.
  14. Had our 34m Bronto today, awesome bit of kit, I managed to get four trees on the deck by two o'clock, I recon it would have taken at least 3 days climbing. 45 minutes of that was inspecting with an ecologist (she turned up half hour late aswell) The close inspection allowed one to be felled, with the removal of some side branches of another. Back home by 3, mop up tomorrow.
  15. Shabz statistics: the chance of you winning the lottery with one ticket is around 14 million to one, what would 7 mean to someone? Chance of failure of tree causing injury 10000 to 1, or 2???
  16. Arb culture, a worked example will not be very helpful to you, the finished calculations do not show how the values are arrived at. Values for occupancy, size of part and other factors such as reduced mass are derived from the QTRA wheel or in the calculator. The concept and how the maths work are explained when you do the training for the license.
  17. Has anyone used big truck mounted MEWPS? I've got a 34m one booked from Nationwide. What are peoples experiences?
  18. I use a Petzl Torse. Not much additional outlay. How are you attaching the Croll to the butterfly?
  19. Tommer 9, my point is that anyone CAN ring up and ask for assessment. If you don't want to because you can't see the benefit -don't. Just because you are not AAAC does not mean you are unprofessional- acting unprofessionally makes you unprofessional . This is where we all have different ideas- the AA is trying to give some guidance to our customers and they can only promote companies that have proved their professionalism in an assessment. They DO acknowledge however that other companies DO exist in their leaflet.
  20. Skyhuck, "large investment of hard earned cash"- the only investment required is the fee to be assessed and the 'membership' fee. I can't remember how much that is exactly but roughly a grand for assessment and four or five hundred pounds a year, this is not a 'large' investment. Or can I assume you are referring to incidental costs for following H&S protocol and being professional? Do you have a hang up about the scheme because never in a month of Sundays would you pass the assessment? If you are happy about the way you run your business fine, but why criticize a scheme just because you have CHOSEN not to conduct your self within the parameters of that scheme?
  21. If your contract does not specify that he can cancel you, he must offer you work or pay you 'statutory guarantee pay'. However at twenty odd pounds you are better off taking it as holiday. If you are taking it as holiday it is not improving his cash flow as he is still paying you- he is just safe guarding future profit. If he pays you nothing it is really taking the piss- you are taking the hit for his business not functioning properly.
  22. It won the Grand National as a rank outsider!
  23. I use CAD mainly for Plans in BS5837 Reports. Usually the site plans are provided by the architects and the tree data is added using Arborcad. However the last one I did we were not given electronic drawings, with knowledge on how to draw I was able to draw the existing buildings and proposed extension, and then plot the trees on. I have also completed landscape plans from carpark drawings in both plan and elevation. Knowing how to remove parts of the existing drawing and draw on items such as fencing and give annotation has been really handy. Snowy, you are taught how to draw using construction lines, mirror, copy trim, extend, chamfer etc. The use of model space and layout. Viewports, borders, templates, relative and absolute positions. It does not really go into architectural drawing although the principles are the same. You complete more and more complicated drawings to learn more functionality. You have two assessments.
  24. It depends what you want to do with CAD, Arborist Sites uses CAD for a lot of his work, if you do what I do the C&G is fine. The C&G teaches you how to use all the drawing commands and how to use model and layout etc. Most of the time I'm using other peoples drawings and turning their layers off, then using Arborcad. I can however now draw with CAD which has been handy.
