Well quite honestly the only reason I don't run my two more often is the fact one needs a set of rings which are 038 Mag size,52 mm and the other has a leaky clutch side seal . I have parts to fix both .Just haven't taken the time to so You just get caught up in things and rather than take time to fix the problem you make do .Just the other day finally after 13-14 years got around to changing an alternator on one of my tractors . 1951 Ferguson TO 20 which had been converted to 12 volts with a Chevy interagal alternator .I dug around my shop until I found one with the same mounting, had the thing finished in about two hours .Afterwards I thought to myself ,fought that rascal for all that time ,constantly having to use a battery charger to keep it going and fixed it that quickly .Geeze talk about dumb .
  2. It's all in the terminoligy .While the baffles do indeed hold a series of screened holes which act as spark arresters they do indeed act as baffles. You probabley gain 35 more percent of open muffler area by removing same as well as an additional port to discharge the exhaust .They get louder but if you use ear protection not that bad . We on this side of the pond unless there are noise ordances in some cities or cutting on US Forest service lands are not under any edicts barring us from modifying our saws .Dealers are governed under franchise agreements but private owners are not .Besides if we were most of us would ignore it anyway .
  3. If the IPL is correct the 020 and 200T lists two baffle plates .A 6 hole version sold in Canada US and Aus. .The other plate most likely what is sold in GB has 5 holes .As far as I know they are all removable unless a special muffler is used in GB I'm not aware of .Anything is possible I guess .
  4. While on this subject of 200T's most of them died from a cooked top end .I have no idea how it is on the eastern side of the broad Atlantic but flea bay US you can often land the entire crankcase with a crankshaft often for 50 dollars US funds . Fact I did just that to repair an 020T with a 200T crankcase .Looks kind of odd ,one screw cap and one flippy cap .
  5. Well great minds think alike they say but it comes down to typing skills of which I lack .I could form text twice faster if I could only type with two fingers instead of one .
  6. FWIW I have four illusitrated parts lists for the 020T including the rear handled 020 version and one for the 200T .None show a bolt in the flywheel portion or side of the crankshaft . They do show a hex flange nut M8 by 1 which I might add is standard for several small sized Stihl saws .Part number 000-955-0802 It's only speculation on my part but could be entirely possible that the threaded stub end of the shaft was irrepairabley damaged in some way and the crankshaft end drilled taped for threads and a bolt installed in leau of a nut for repairs .Quite possibley an M6 Torx head which would be a T 27 size .Were it a standard M6 socket head it should be 5 mm Allen type.--See all this time you folks thought us Yanks just used 24" Cresent wrenchs and ball peen hammers ---
  7. Not all 200T's had the accelerator pump model of carb ,only the later in production models . Depending on where they were sold some of the later production 020T's could have a fixed main jet carb instead of a fully adjustable model . I think but am not certain that the MS 200T was the only one that used that so called "intella carb " at least I've never seen one on an 020T .As far as nuts and bolts I can't say as I've paid much attention . Now on a side note I recently noted differences on Stihl blowers namely the BG -85 .For some unknown reason Stihl slightly changed the throttle linkage and several other things .Why I have no idea but I suppose that's just Stihl being Stihl .

As I alluded to I think what you will find is the 042 and 048 model Stihls are more of a collectors item these days than a working type saw .In good tune they run just fine but because of a rather short production run they never gained in popularity which makes it not really lucrative to produce after market parts for them . Conversely the 038 model in praticular the magnum version reached world wide acclaim and thus with the vast amount produced plus the following it gained this model is very luctrative to produce after market parts for .Purely a question of economics .

There is brand new cylinder as I type on flea bay US .All they want is a mere300 dollars US for it plus shipping of course . I don't think the entire saw is worth that much .
  10. FWIW I've had good luck with Meteor pistons but don't care for the circlips which are slightly thicker than OEM so I just use OEM .
  11. It's most likely an air leak and possibley the carb boot .They have a tendency to tear on the bottom side and they just about need to be removed in order to see . The Stihl design of anti vib system on most models uses an annular buffer which is top left hand side of the handle / air box .Over time undetected they have a tendency to weaken a little bit and over time this additional movement stresses the carb boot .
  12. Depends on who you talk to .Some swear by them and some swear at them .
  13. China ,really ? Well don't that just suck .I assumed they were made in Virginia Beach Va .
  14. There is suppossed to be a foil type of heat shield between the bottom of the cylinder and the thermal plastic bottom of the case .If that item is omited on a reassembley it stands a good chance of melting the plastic .
  15. FWIW you can take Stihl mount bar that would fit say 026 to 066 and adapt it to just about any saw made .Two examples . I have an old restored 2100S Homelite that uses a 36" 066 mount Windser bar .The difference in the wider slot of the Stihl bar and the 3/8" studs of the Homelite are adapted using spacers which are essentually just precission turned thick washers that any machinest could do in ten mintues . Conversely I also have a 42" 066 mount size milled to fit an 084 Stihl which has a wider slot in that bar size . Stihl mount bars are plentiful where as some of the others are not .To coin an old phrase"there's more than one way to skin a cat "
  16. It's the same mount as the 2100 Husqvarna which is the same as a 372 if that helps you .The McCulloch version of the p-100 takes Mac 10 series mount bars which depending may or may not interchange ,some will some will not .I can only assume the J-red version uses about the same .

Let me add a little more on this .7-8-9 years ago I landed an 048 from flea bay from Oregon from a Stihl dealer .It had a spun main bearing . I split the cases ,raised the metal in the bearing pocket and used loctite press fit compound to hold the new bearing which was quite pricey I might add .That saw was early enough it had slotted screws which I replaced with torx head .In that case it worked out okay but as I type that saw does need a new set of rings .It does fine but needs a little pep up. Now keep in mind and I'm not boasting by any means just facts .I'm a collecter and restorer and have done half-fast repairs for years .I am suggesting that complex repairs or has been talked about retrofitting a saw cylinder from a different model to this model is beyond the scope of the casual saw owner .Something to keep in mind .

    048

Just a suggestion before anyone rushs out and buys one with a scarffed piston .Granted there are a lot of Stihl pistons in 52 MM bore size but keep in mind the 048 is 13 mm pin size .Most are 12 mm . Now you know if a person wanted a challange and you could get it cheap enough and had the where with all and the knowledge to do machining work I'd say go for it .If not this thing is red headed step child trying to find parts for . This is not a buy an after market bolt on cylinder thing you can do for under a hundred bucks US funds whatever ever that figures out to in international currency .

    048

I don't really know if they were actual case leakers or if that's an old wives tale .Some of the early models were put together with straight slotted screws that I do know .That in it's self would be prone to leakage .The later models used 5 mm Torx heads just like they use now . As far as I know there are no aftermarket pistons and cylinders for either an 048 or an 042 .Now what you folks in England might have I haven't a clue but I know stateside there are none . As far as the 038 Mag ,it might be possible to graft a cylinder but I've never heard of any one doing it .Which again is not saying it's impossible . Parts come up on flea bay US every so often and depending they might be cheap or they might try for high .I'd imagine if you watch that auction site they might in GB also . Old saws are a waiting game because if you wait long enough the parts will show up .

    048

Hmm well there seems to be a fly in the ointment here .The 048 uses a 13 mm piston pin and the 038 is a 12 .It appears by the IPl the rod end on the 048 is 17 mm and the 038 is 16 mm ID .Fact the pin bearing on the 048 is 13-17-14.5 .Which is not to say if you couldn't find a bearing 12-17 14.5 or close in width that it wouldn't work. You'd likely have to carve the piston bosses down because the 038 mag lists a 13mm pin width. I can't honestly say so one way or the other if it would work or not . When I get some time I'll look up the specs on an 041 which wouldn't be any more simple to find than parts for than 048 but you never know .

    048

For general info the 038 Av is 48 mm,super 50 and mag is 52 .Same rings as the 048 but I'm not certain if the piston is the same . Parts are rare especially clutch side seals and air filters .Piston ,cylinders probabley only used . I've got two of them both stock and when I use them they do fine but quite frankly a good running 038 mag will out run them .There's only about 4 cc's diff the mag being 72 and the 048 I think 76.7 or there abouts
  22. Well Martin P the good news is the 038 cover can work the bad news being it must be adapted .The exhaust ports are the same size on both saws as well as the attachment screws being the same 42 mm spacing . Two things that won't fit .First because of a protrubance of metal on the 048 as indicated by the scrench in the pic either a spacer must be fabricated to space out the muffler or the muffler side resculptured with a hammer or some other means .Secondly the bottom bolt holes will not align because the 038 muff is shorter than the 048 but a piece could be fabricated of alumiunm to rectify this problem depending on your fabrication skills . In the other pic from left to right 028,038 magnum ,042 and far right 048 with a full wrap west coast handle ---good luck .
  23. Both the 042 and 048 were not manufactured for a long period of time and were suppossedly removed from production because of case leaks due to design .The 048 at one time had the highest HP to displacement ratio of any saw which of course has been surpassed . They list 4 different mufflers for the 048 plus one for the 042 but any will work which doesn't help in your quest for a muffler .Merely information . Both the 042 and 048 share the basic design of the 028 and 038 but parts for either are rather scarce .Perhaps with alteration it might be possible to adapt a muffler from an 038 a fact of which I'm uncertain of without trying it . Being the nice guy I am though I will make a trip to my shed and see if it is possible as I do have a saw to repair today .
  24. Years ago we tried one direct mounted to the PTO of a Fergusen TO 20 .It proved to rather dangerious running at PTO speed . My father then used a salvaged Jeep differential and transmission on a trailer mount also connected to a tractor PTO which worked a lot better .We split a lot of wood with it .Fact the trailer plus the screw are still around although it's been 30 years since anybody used it .

    porting 281xp

I noticed that myself .Almost seems counter intuative to normal design .I've got a 281 . Bone stock but it does pretty good the way it is. If I recall correctly they use a double transfer tunnel which is actually a better design than Stihl .
