  1. i completely agree. my point is that, i personally, don't do this job for the money. i do it because i enjoy it. even the less enjoyable parts of it. i'd rather chip all day for £70 than sit in an office all day for £120 but i'd rather climb all day for £50 (don't tell my boss!!) you don't do this work because of the money you get paid, it's a lifestyle choice. you do it because you get to tell chicks that you climb trees all day!!!
  2. yeah, i don't mind doing it, just think i should get paid more for the least enjoyable parts of the job. i'd get more money for climbing all day than i would for chipping all day, if i got paid for the enjoyment factor, i'd be on £250 a day for chipping and £30 for climbing
  3. i'm amazed anyone ever advertises in the yellow pages. you'd go to google first and a decent website isnt that hard or expensive to get
  4. Well said!!! if you get paid £25 a day then, who's fault is that? If you're not happy then go work in asda. I always wonder why i don't get paid more for chipping than i do for climbing, not the other way round. i love climbing!! but why on earth would i ever want to feed a chipper??
  5. i have both, but don't see the sense in cs 40 (is that the pruning one?) since it isn't particularly a health and safety orientated certificate. it's more a quality thing. it'd be crazy to make people do it for insurance purposes. more a british standard thing i'd say
  6. looks like a pish knot to me. that looks like it would just bind up and you'd have to put loads of effort into advancing it. i don't suppose it would drop you though. maybe it's a "pussy knut", that's what i'd call it.
  7. i don't personally believe that fifty grand a year is too much to expect for someone you describe. it only works out to 200 pounds per day. if i were to re take all of the tickets i have, it would probably cost eight grand. i could get a degree for that!! that plus the annual cost of running, it's savage. i'll easily spend a grand a year on trouser, boots and chains. that's before i even get off the ground. we're seriously undervalued as an industry, but that's never going to change until public perception does. and i can't see that happening in a hurry.
  8. it was my understanding that as a land owner, you have a duty of care for anyone who uses your land? irrespective of whether they are invited or not? was vta not born of this?
  9. that sounds about right to me too. try barony at dumfries if you want to drive that far!!! i did mine at newton rigg, years ago, but i'm not so sure they're that bothered. i think a company called john jones is who they outsource to nowadays.Tel 01768 898731 Mob 07818664308, maybe give them a go. they're based in penrith.
  10. really? i always thought that was illegal? moonlighting? i stand corrected!!
  11. you know it's illegal for a full time fireman to work another job??? he must just be a factory worker>
  12. i just got a hitchclimber on saturday, now i just want to climb every tree available!!! it's awesome. does your lockjack tend slack for you? can you free climb the tree and it will sort it all out for you? that'd be cooler.

    scotland

have you all noticed that scotsmen work harder??
  14. the best advice on here mate. put an 880 through his decking, drop the old ba*&^d and tell him to shove it. take a couple of saws with you to pay for your training too. don't be a doormat all your life.
  15. we have one at work that was already converted and it was awfull to drive. had to uprate all suspension components to sort it and it's still not that clever.
  16. man alive!! i just gave mine to the nice irishmen that came and said they'd take it away for only twenty quid. i didn't realise they were worth that sort of money!! i still have one of these though, if they float anyones boat???
  17. alright rod, i got an invitation to barony for the grand opening of their new business development centre, did you? i haven't any credit on my phone or i would've just called.

  18. my point exactly!! how can these things have a set, pre-determined value, when everyone is different. surely it makes more sense to decide on a safety factor and then work out what rating you need for your specific requirements. if you look at my avatar, you'll see that i'm a bit of a lard ass. i weigh 110 ish kilos, if i'm rescuing someone of my own portly stature, then surely i would need at least a krab that had a rating of 24kn (110kg+110kg+20kg for gear =240kg = 24Kn min) but the other lad at work (he doesn't mind being called a moron) weighs maybe 80kg so, if he's rescuing someone of his own size, he needs a krab thats rated at a mere 18Kn (80kg+80kg+20kg= 180kg = 18Kn) if that doesn't make sense then i'll chip all day in my underpants wearing a dunce hat!
  19. i used to work for a very large company that refused to issue me spikes because i didn't have cs41 at the time. i wouldn't let anyone work on a pole if i was the rescue climber. i had the HSE number on speed dial and wasn't afraid to use it. never did use it though, just the threat of it usually works.
  20. i'm one of his colleagues, and i was on the krabs side. i'm sure it's double your weight, then ten times, that brings most non americans up to roughly the same rating (18-24Kn) but the other moron at work reckons that it's 24Kn of force irrespective.
  21. i saw mentioned in another thread that someone was trying to get his boss to have regular rescue practise, just wondered how many of us do this? i think it's a good idea and the HSE will certainly be asking questions if there's an accident and it takes 20 mins for a rescue.
  22. welcome scotty dog!! you took your time joining here.
  23. you must be one of the bloods! i didn't know gangland warfare went as far as wildlife!!!
