  1. Also called 'occluded' bark. Probably technically correct as opposed to 'included' bark.
  2. Not UK. Sardinia. South of Corsica (France), west of Italy, east of Spain and north of Africa. Somewhere in the Med. It belongs to Italy.
  3. As I understand it, according to BS 5837:2005 a designated root protection area (RPA) of a circle 12x the diameter of a single stem tree. This area should be plotted and remain undisturbed! My thanks to treedave for bringing the updated BS 5837 to my attention.
  4. In northern Sardinia there are two old olive trees. One is about two thousand and the one in the pic is about four thousand years old (allegedly). I think they may be the most ancient olives on earth. Really nice place too. Growing in tall grassland and quiet country location. Olivastri millinairi (or spelt something like that)
  5. These birches where perfect for the location in terms of size and appearance. I think now they have planted small/medium maples in mitigation.
  6. Thats not a crown lift, this is a crown lift...
  7. Construction site somewhere near me. Needless to say the tree officer was not too happy.
  8. Nice job. Is that Oslo?
  9. I've heard the term 'pleaching' used to refer to 3 completely different things. 1. Hedgelaying. 2.Grafting tree branches together. 3. Siding up (mature)tree crowns in order to allow extra light into felled forest areas (group fell) . I've used tie straps to join lateral lime branches along with pruning and shaping to form a 'hedge on stilts'. Now that its matured into shape a tractor and flail should manage it now. In some towns of northern Spain I have seen plane trees planted about 4 yards apart in a grid. The trunks are straight to about 10 foot and the pollarded crowns are pruned and pleached together forming a continuos living trellis overhead. Really smart.
  10. http://www.pro-tectsafetysigns.com Full (rollup-flexi) Chapter 8 is 352 quid plus vat. At Buxtons it 550 plus vat. No point in buying rigid signs as they can easily be salvaged from hedgerows over time.
  11. I've only heard of 100% first year allowance for environmentally friendly or eco-beneficial assetts. There is a list of items that qualify on the hmrc website. I argue that woodchippers should be put on this list for the obvious reasons.
  12. As a business that is not 'permanently' contracted within the construction industry I find CIS a bit of a blow to the cashflow. Although it takes some of the pain out of the tax bill a year or so down the line it starves the usual pattern of cash flow. Bloody unfair if you ask me. It would be better if there was an exemption allowance of perhaps 10-20k per firm or 5k per individual.
  13. WhenI started up 10 years ago my bank account swung gently from a little red to a little black. Now it swings like hell from a lot of red to a lot of black and back again. I could never commit to a set wage due to the organic and uncertain nature of the business. My philosophy has always been to take what I need when I really need it. I would rather use my savings to trade with than lock them away for a pittance of interest. Just my simplistic POV.
  14. Has anyone got or tried to get the AA Tech Cert. I might be interested in it but could do with some experienced opinions/pointers. I've looked at the ABC Awards site etc but I'm still in the dark about basic stuff such as course venues, duration and attendance requirements. I've contacted some of the colleges ABC say do the course but in actual fact they don't! I'm based in the Midlands area and would hope not to have to travel too far too often or take too much time off work. Maybe this puts the kibosh on it?
  15. Pick the most wooded line of latitude and go for it!
  16. I've been self-unemployed for the past 10 years and went voluntarily vat regd 3 or so years ago. Having to do my accounts on a quarterly basis helps me to keep on top of the books because otherwise I just let it slide. I'm chuffed vat flat rate was raised as I'd forgotten about it so now I'm looking into it. I'm thinking get the new truck before April 5th and go flat rate for year end 08.
  17. My humble apologies for the mis-use of the word 'van'.
  18. Thanks Mr Ed. So I either go for a 3.5 t tipper and also buy a road tow chipper or go for something bigger. I currently only have a tracked chipper which I pull about on an Ifor GX85 plant trailer. Together they weigh about 1700kgs. I've had a good look at the commercial tipper vans on offer. Are there any models to avoid or perhaps to recommend?
  19. Time has come for me to expand the fleet and I'm wanting to by a tipper, possibly crew cab such as an LDV, Transit, Cabstar type truck. Obviously for arb work and needs to be reliable. If it could tow 1.6 t of trkd chipper and trailer might be a bonus. I'm thinking spend around 10k plus vat mark(ish). I also a run a Hi-lux for general ripping about and an old Landy for forestry type stuff. Any suggestions? Your insights would be gratefully recieved!
  20. Thanks TS. I need to get some more literature. When quizzed by the client about the TO's statement I was shy to agree as it did'nt seem quite so black and white to me. Seemed a bit 'arboriculture by numbers' to me. I did however rcommend the tree should be removed as its an overgrown weed in a bloody stupid place and causing hazard and damage to boot!
  21. Not really pecon as the tree is abutted to the wall. From above the root plate would appear semi-circular. The wall is 15 feet high and the roots grow donwards behind it and the wall is increasingly bulging out.
  22. If your ability to perform mentally and physically is impaired by drug use, be that legal or otherwise, and therefore your actions put your team mates and/or the public at increased risk, then f*** ***, grow up, get real, pull yourself together, take responsibility and be a man. Time and a place. I dont take my saw and ropes down down the pub on a friday night so why get smashed at work?
  23. Is it or is it not a fact that crown reduction by 10-30% has the effect of halting root growth below ground? I ask because this is what a tree officer told my client. In this case we are discussing a medium-large size ash. I think the canopy would stand 15% reduction. The roots are pushing against a retaining wall and the tree is self set.
  24. I get the missus to rub me down with hi-viz goose fat and just wear a saw protective thong and wellies. Or the Husky Typhoon jackets are OK.
  25. We did Signing, Lighting and Guarding, Unit 2 of Chapter 8 at West Mids Training in Brum. 165 quid a man. Done in a day. Accredited ID card and City Guilds Certificate to boot! The whole thing is just a formality, dont expect to burn any brain cells!
