  11. the binders may be nicer but a good whisker south of england looks the business. can not understand with midland why it has to have a short back and sides one side. still a good style but the rolls of styles is south. True Midlands style developed in combination with a hedge side ditch. The ditch gives some protection to the new shoots and the brush retained on the far or field side helps to keep the cattle off. Midlands is basically a cattle barrier which is why it should be 4 to 4'6" high. Laying off centre (only about 9") 'single brush' style makes laying easier next time round as the new stems come straight up and not such a rats nest. Lower hedges and double brush hedges laid into the centre are typical of arable or sheep farms. I've laid a few Midlands style hedges over the years and only a few jobs actually had a ditch to work with. Probably because these days more work can be found laying garden, country park, urban and other amenity hedges than on cattle farms. Looks proper good when the ditch is cleaned at the same time as the hedge is laid though.

  16. I started up in business 16 years and 18 days ago. I was a life styler for the first 11 years. Worked hard and progressed steadily, if the weather was rough I could stay home, if I wanted time off, I took time off etc.. During the credit crunch of 2008 I decided to commit to ensuring a more secure income with a view to expanding and creating a company to be proud of. Now it's full on flat out full bore. Every hour counts as the stakes get higher. I still cut and climb but management work gets in the way and many an hour is spent on paperwork, planning, quotes and staff etc.. I still love this job, good days and bad, I like hard work. Essentially with expansion comes greater risk and greater sacrifice. A business is like a pet monster, manageable when it's small but the bigger it gets the more it takes to maintain and you daren't turn your back on it for a minute. Financial rewards? It's can be hard to tell sometimes, just keep chasing that carrot....
  17. Nice one Mortis, reference the blog I totally agree. Planning to update blog tomorrow. But only time will tell if it'll be kept up long term.
  18. Jomoco, Thanks for taking the time to look at it. I was thinking that myself as it isn't obvious that it was a take down job and the clean looking pruning cut suggests otherwise. We'll replace with something more suitable. Cheers, Alex
  19. Thanks for that Luke, got IT looking at it now. Should be sorted shortly!

  21. We're in the market for a used tipper with chip box and tool box. Preferably a transit but we're open to all options at this point. It's proving a lot harder to locate one than last time, the only options we seem to have are new vehicles and we're not sure we want to go that route. Let us know if anybody has anything for sale or knows where we could get hold of one!
