  1. 3-4 wraps 2-3 braids usually adjust to what feels good and keep it like that on the rope for a while and that gets some nice glazing going on on my friction cord. what rope and cord you guys find works best with a vt?
  2. at a guess i would say some sort of honey fungus but that photos crap steve! seen quite a few big surviving elms finally get dutch elm this year so maybe its some sort of secondary infection? i think the drought really knocked them last year and been submerged in water now hasnt really helped but im sure thats the case with lots of dieing trees at the moment.
  3. well i tryed today but was eating crisps and needed a chocolate kickstart by 3 pm.........drink plenty of water and try and eat healthy but its all to easy to grab some crisps. I dont have the time in the day to do that sorta regime i find it hard enough to make breakfast and lunch before having to load the truck up and organise the day, gonna get some porridge for a good start and see if that makes the differance but im still swearing by powerade for a afternoon pick me up
  4. I seem to get loads of people asking me to take them rec climbing ,only taken about 2 though in last 14 years...been on a few midnight excersions to take some mistletoe for local pubs on some big populars wich was a laugh, made a zip line the other weekend and got to throw next doors misses out a cage! 5. he passed.....the point i was trying to make was he didnt know what the hell the letter box cut was by this name and i also had never heard of it either, just panicked when he was told to make the cut as it was bad enough trying to erase 30 years of bad habits and make good for the assesor when he was not shown or told the name of the cut in the basic training....any ways its all gravey now ! and he can get his new felling contract from the forrestry comision.
  6. why advoid those things especially chocolate lucazade ect?
  7. dont spose it would to a man of your enginering calibre ed!...should be a nice set up when done
  8. looks a bit tight for a chip box combo ..
  9. sheesh..i think ed gota a deal ..... my dad brought a transit ex BT with a platform on probably half the height of eds but it saved so much time doing council road side raising, hedges ect and made that last bit of chogging down with an 88 much easyer than on spikes that it was worth its wieght...it amazes me that in the uk we dont use platforms so much....but then most of us running small out fits know the reason for that!
  10. was a gamble but she seems strong and the dealer gave me a warrenty on it so at half the price it was hard not to resist....only took the 288xp in for a service as it was running a bit dodge.. Id check that gear out mate a loccal dealer is better than somthing of e bay but only if hes gonna give you warenty any sorta problems should be obvious after half hour. derailed the hand saw thread a bit though!
  11. id try one but my newest toy this second hand 36" 395 i brought a couple of weeks ago has left me skint! [/img]

theres a book about his life story and the firm he worked for in timber falling called the wood cutters tale and theres been a few bits about him in various arb mags. The books got some awsome pictures of old day felling huge trees with axes ect.. i was told he was quite unwell and the doctors had put it down to years of two stroke fumes as he had never smoked.

How do you find the honda 4 stroke andy? used one a bit but found it quite heavy but liked the idea so i brought a stihl 4 mix long reach....find that worse though as your reaching up all the time with the engine in your face and i think its no cleaner than a normal 2 stroke but then its not proper 4 stroke like the honda....will be needing a new hedge cutter soon as my old hs 80 is getting more temperamental every time its used
  15. Well I think the point i was trying to make was that he nor i had ever heard of a letter box cut.....the cut and technique of why we used it of course ,but we just called it boring out the hinge.........evan when i worked with other fallers with quality oak i never heard it called a letterbox cut

thanks for the informative replys ...im thinking of doing it for purely health reasons..... after running two stroke engines every day for 13 years and at times getting carbon monoxide poisoning bad....... im convinced thats half the reason i feel run down and crap half the time and its not the beer, honest! I once heard of a guy who switched to bio chain oil and evan that made the differance to his health after a few months. lee your right mate its damn expensive and i know i could not afford to go out and stock up on it on monday morning but i dont think you can put a price on good health..look at guys like mervyn walker who after a life time of breathing in two stroke fumes are now seriusly ill and he never smoked and probably for the first 10 years of his working lifes was on axes.i think some of us are gonna be suffering later on.

any one tried this stuff??? Do you have to mod your saws? Im seriously considering changing to it health benifits alone, but running bio chain oil as well would be a good company gimmick
  18. left school and wanted to travel but seeing as i was only 16 ended up dragging brush and humping timber a year or so later was at merrrist wood doing nc arb been in industry since .only regret is not doing an nd would of been nice to chill as a tree officer later in life!
  19. so this would be classed as a letter box cut.forgot the big saw fellin this dead beach and had to make do with a 16" 357 [/img]
  20. nice job guys ....bet it was fun on the phone when the customer rang up asking for some bell end shaped topiary....sorry could not resist been looking at the spam on the buzz to much
  21. been using it for years just never known it to be called that! just spoke to my mum who said my old man had past his felling nptc's but was a bit confused when they asked him to do a letter box cut. evan though hes been using using saws for 30 years profesionaly he finally got around to doing them! But glad he passed i know he had quite a few bad habits thumbs on top of handles ect
  22. does any one know what a letter box felling cut is ????????? im guessing its just a bored out hinge?
  23. baked chicken in an experimental cream garlic cheese and french mustard and honey sauce. red cabbage ,tender brocoli and d new potatoes......... dunno what its gonna taste like but im lookin forward to it!
