  1. Most of my work is around 2 hours drive away, and i drag a caravan to any site where there's a week or more's work and 90 mins or more driving. It's the only way I can carry on, because the fuel bill would cripple me if I drove, and 4 hours driving on top of 8+ hours physical work every day isn't that good. You obviously save time during the week, but you spend a lot of weekend time getting it ready before a job, then slopping it out when you get back. I know mine was cheap at £700, and it's only 12 foot or so, and it's 20 years old, but it's not pleasant having to spend so much time in it, especially when it's very cold, as everything becomes damp (although my plan to fit a woodburner should cure that). The worst part's having to crap in what is nothing more than a glorified bucket which is only 3 foot or so from where I cook and eat my meals.
  2. Which one did you get, and how much was it?
  3. How far do you reckon you'd be towing from base? If you're going long distances, switching to a trailer might put you into EU driver's hours regs, tachograph rules etc. which might be something you'd want to avoid..
  4. What John said..those dates are for farmers who are in SFP, I think..the March cutoff date is for flailing, but they also say you can lay hedges into April as a last resort, providing you don't disturb anything as per C&WA. If it has to be done, and you can cope with the hassle, I've heard that some people net hedges around now to keep birds from getting in and nesting, then they do the work as and when..could that be an option?
  5. They seem to be quite hard to find for hire, but what about Burden's, North Kyme, lincs..is that too far? They can deliver. bit expensive for a day, but in january I had a TW 190 delivered for £690 for the week. Good kit as well, with only 30 hours on it. 01526 860060
  6. where do you get those from? I use welding gauntlets, which are OK until they get wet, and don't stop all of them by any means.
  7. Is it an NPTC unit or something?
  8. Same as all the above. It's a fantastic saw, with a bit of lower end torque as well - doesn't seem to bog down like newer saws sometimes do. And to think I got mine as a swap for a tired old 026
  9. Yea, frost, or i wish it would dry out. Been doing pa6 assessments in the snow today and yesterday. So many fields have standing water in them, I bet all the local woods are the same..total quagmires. I'm supposed to be cutting some hazel in a wood a few miles from here, but I doubt if I'll be able to drive up to the work,so everything I cut will have to be carried out..that will double the effort needed

  10. As a general rule, I always understood that 30 degrees was good for hardwoods, 25 was good for softwoods. A smaller angle cuts faster, but is weaker, and would need more sharpening. I tend to use 30 degrees, as most of my stuff is hardwood.
  11. I took the day off today..judging from the news yesterday, it was looking like the next ice age was about to start. It's battling my way past the crashed Audis and BMWs i didn't fancy. Only about 1" this morning, of course.. ..having said that, visibility outside has just dropped to about 20 yds here.

  14. Hi dave..yes, been busy and away in the caravan for the last week. was working nearer home yesterday, but the wind was a bit nippy. I've taken today off because of the snow they forecast..it's getting to site that I thought might be the problem..more getting past the idiots in cars who get stuck/crash and block the roads up. Doesn't seem that bad at the moment, though.

  15. ie. we planted these in 2001..just spotted it's unclear, but can't edit original post now.
  16. First picture is some planting done in 2000..typical woodland mix, some in Tubex, some no guards at all inside rabbit fencing. I spot sprayed with glyphosate the following spring and two more springs thereafter. I'm not sure if the client did any maintenance on top of this. Second picture is as near to same position in 2008. Third is next door a year later..same side of same valley, just the other side of the road. They had us plant a similar mix from the same nursery, oaks in Tubex shelters, everything else in spirals. They didn't want any spraying done, and as far as I know, nothing was done by anyone else. Fourth picture in similar position in 2008
  17. No..on a 15 yr rotation you divide your 30 hectares into coupes so you're cutting 1/15th of the total area of 30 hectares each year..so each area gets cut every 15 years. That would yield 30/15 hectares cut per year x 3 tons per year per hectare x 15 years = 90 tons for 10 dwellings.. If it's new planting, getting it started would take time initially.
  18. As a guide...The estate here in Lincs were asking £5 /ton standing for firewood at the beginning of this season (although more recently, some outfit were paying around £10 /ton for ash..standing..this is in Notts..not sure if they made much money on that one). A rough figure for felling and extracting is £18 / ton..I think it splits 50/50 between felling and extracting, so that puts it at £14 / ton at stump. However, we're talking about a different county here, and it all depends on lots of stuff. Are you dealing with the owner direct, or through some sort of agent? This the owner a farmer? I'd be interested to know what price it goes for.
  19. Very true. You often hear it said that British workers can't build cars, are too lazy etc: one of Toyota's most efficient factories is in Burnaston, Derbys, and the Nissan plant near Sunderland is one of the most productive, if not the most productive, in Europe. It was never the workers, it was the managers that were cr@p.
  20. I'm looking at some of the forestry courses at Bangor University..they offer modular courses which could lead to Postgrad cert or diploma or MSc. Has anyone any experience of these? What sort of job prospects are there? Or, is there any demand for such a qualification? I know that some subjects ( eg Environmental Conservation) seem to churn out graduates, but the job opportunities are limited. Thanks for any replies.
  21. There's a firewood supplier near Boston that sells bins of apple wood only. They may be interested if the haulage costs don't kill it. Let me know if you need the number.
  22. Apple makes great mallet or maul heads,if you know of any green woodworkers....
  23. Paid my chipper loan off early..that's £200 per month I don't have to find any more
  24. I paid about £3500, but that was ex dealer, and it was too much really. What I really wanted fell through, so I had to find one in a hurry. It's done alright, but it is really slow. Do you drive landrover, or have you got more sense?

    Stihl 026

Don't know where you are in Notts, but I used to live in Nottingham, and found the Stihl dealers to be totally useless. I ended up changing to Husqy, and I've never looked back. My fisrt saw was an 026, and it did do pretty well. I bought an MS260, which I still have, and I've had a lot of problems with it. As I speak, it's at the bottom ofmy chainsaw cupboard, waiting for me to find out what's wrong with it this time..
