i had the job of sorting out a badly topped beech tree last year for roller. It had been topped at about 70ft, middle taken out and the sides pretty much left. i was able to have my ropeguide around a 10 inch stem just below the previous topping cut, then redirected right into the tips on a 3 inch stem. Beech is strong and i was happy with that small redirect anchor point.....though the risk of a short fall was well worth it for the ease it gave me to carry out the crown restoration. In that situation im also just a little bit more careful how much weight I put on my rope, and tend to remain lanyarded in even just for manourering through the crown. job would have been a pain in the ass without that anchor. a well worthwhile trick to have up your sleeve

thats all very well, but dont you ever have that niggling doubt that the bouncing you've just done has been enough to cause a hairline fracture in the anchor point that could fail on your ascent?

mine turn, but it doesnt really make any difference, i dont worry about it.

in the past when requiring a high anchor point in spindly trees, particularly previously topped trees, ive set my rope guide round a substantial portion of the main trunk then ran a redirect on a double micropulley up in to the tops. can get a really nice anchor point this way and its far safer.

wrist thick as a rule...thats assuming the wood is sound and strong, and upright....to many variables to really say though in fairness

cheers matty. for the most part yes. most of the reduction points were 4" tops but there were some big old spurs and broken limbs that needed to be removed.

deva, i never take my line up, try to avoid snagging it if i can, failing that just get the groundies to free it up as and when needed.....oh and that song isnt exactly my music choice, i only picked it because it was the first song i came across that was the same duration as the video!
