Fomes flying high

Have been managing this Beech down, over 4/5 years, as it's vitality has slowly dwindled.

Currently left as a high unfinished stick, until London Zoo have taken what they require (from the dismantled sections) for some of their mammal enclosures next week.

Plan to leave it as 6m Mono standing dead.

What I've found interesting with this one, was partly the solitary Fomes bracket I spotted up on a canopy branch at fully 20+ meters, but also the colouration.

There is some thought (& unfinished work, as far as i can make out) between David Lonsdale & Francis Schwartz, (from the 90's) as to there being two (or possibly more) forms of this fungi.

A Northern European (possibly darker) & a Southern European, lighter bracket.

This one appears to fit the Southern remit.

Is this sub sp moving north?

Any one care to offer up views or experience of either from different locations?

First shot is from May 08

The rest are from today.

ps, nice of you to link the fomes word back to the fungi glossary, just had a good read of the fomes fometarius section:thumbsup:

Glad it was noticed Rob, I thought it may have been too subtle :001_smile:

......heres a few shots of the tree back before it gone too far down the path of no return.

We got Andy Cowan over 18 months ago to have a look at it with the thermo camera.

Prognosis wasn't great

not ever having used a thermo or knowing what it does or even actually being near one:blushing:... what does it do and what results and information can be used/gained from using it?

sorry for the simple newb question, but all this "proper" (haha) tree work is something that i hope to be doing in the future...

not that what i'm doing is not proper..:001_rolleyes:

i'll stop digging now, that holes getting pretty big:001_tt2:

Rob, a fine & merited question for sure, but wth respect, due to the contraversial nature of it's methodology I'll lead you to other more pertinent threads that should indulge you.

would like to keep this one more on track regarding the Fomes

Hoping you understand the re-rail
