l200 /hilux

has any body got a l200 i am after a pick up for week end work and log delivery's

. i really wanted to get a hilux but after weeks of looking i cant seen to find the right one ! now my missis getting on at me to stop being a snob and look into a l200 i always been told the are **** but with how much cheaper they are then the toyota i would have plenty of spare cash to fix it when it breaks .

 

are they really that bad ? looking at 2009 plus with a budget of up to 10 for the right one advice appreciated

I really like the L200s. I have had a few of older 2006 models. They are basic but as a work truck thats what you want. My current L200 is manual locking, manual windows, white,cloth interior. I put mud terrains on it and it's great. Can tow 2700kg happily, ok in general off road settings, reasonably comfortable for 4 blokes. It's not a motorway cruiser necessarily as it gets noisey above 60mph.

 

Are you looking for double, king or single cab? You can pick up a decent 3 year old, 60k L200's for £8-9k plus VAT. Mainly double cabs but you get singles too. Get one without a tow bar and add your own.

 

I do most if the servicing and repairs myself. I find them very straightforward. Get nearly everything from Milners but have found mitsubishi are not that expensive for more specialist parts.

Look at rangers or mazdas nice trucks for the money i prefer them to l200 and think they r on par with hilux personally

I am not a big fan of Mitsubishi . I have heard hilux not as good now but mine have been superb I will continue with Toyota until I have a problem.

I've an 06 L200 (later shape, higher geared better on fuel) had it 7-8 years now. It goes out everyday quoting and often has the stump grinder in the bed, also does log deliveries and tows the Bandit or Ifor tipper several times a week. In the time I've had all I've replaced is a clutch and two rear springs as a few leafs broke as well as the usual tyres brake pads etc. That's a good truck as far as I'm concerned.

I got a LWB Shogun. Would I have another Mitsi? NO, sorry.

 

Rust! They rust really badly dead easily.

 

And then mechanically, they a good designed car but build with poorly made parts that break easily - or make that rot and fall off too...

 

She has the Outlander PHEV.

 

A lease car, but again I again wouldn't actually buy one.

 

VERY thin paint, that easily chips, loads of nooks and crannys where dirt is going to collect and then very soon rust (again).

 

And under the bonnet?? You open - you look - and then close it!

 

They are no longer a 'fix yourself' car...

 

They're a take it to a main dealer only garage and have deep filled pockets at the ready car....

 

Mate has a Ranger, slightly older than mine (and worked harder) with a few more miles on. And it's in way better nick than my Shogun.....

Don't I know it, check out my L200 build thread:blushing: In saying that I think most of these new breed pickups are over priced and not the robust work horses they used to be, can't say much about the Hilux but know of Rangers, Rodeos, and Navaras that are under five years old and all had major engine work.

Quite true, older trucks from Toyota and Nissan especially were over engineered generally (even if the bodies / chassis suffered), but with your budget you should get an excellent truck - either Hilux, Ford or Mazda though personally I'd give Mitsubishi a miss. The older post '98 l200's were pretty much a disaster mechanically, though i can't speak for newer models

Doesn't seem long ago you could get a poverty spec double cab new for 14 k . Now most seem the wrong side of 24 k . I think because they are tax savers the manufacturers are cashing in.
