Very neat Graham. What is the deal with the square timber posts? Is it a competition thing? Or is it because there is a lack of suitable material coming from the hedge itself?

Stafford and Derby hedges are generally staked with sawn posts. Possibly because of(historically) a local shortage of coppice products.

When hedges were managed on a regular basis then there would have been enough wood in the hedge to utilize for stakes.

Cheshire and NW Champs. All axe work. No saws allowed. The hedge is laid very narrow...about 6" at the top tapering to 9" or so at the base. Second place.cheshire1.jpg.b273203803ead7f443b08f8baf1e0d4f.jpg
