Walnut query

Hello all,

 

Took down a dead walnut yesterday. No turnout of foliage this year but still had sap coming out of the large wood when we cut it.

 

It forked into 2 stems at around 10feet from the ground. I have 2 sections the dimensions are roughly 10foot long x 25inches tapering to around 15inches and a slightly smaller lump.

 

All 3 are pretty straight and probably uneventful inside.

 

With the information I've given above could anyone help me please?

 

1. Should I wait a few months or mill it asap.

2. I'm not sure whether to sell it or keep for my own use.

3. If I were to mill it for future sale what would be a popular thickness.

4. Should I think about letting some go for sale, where would anyone suggest offering it up for sale.

Put some pictures up

A lot depends on the amount of heart wood

Felled a few recently, some with large amounts of a good chocolate colour some with hardly any at all. The timber with not much will go for logs as there is value in that

The better stuff is getting milled within a few weeks of it coming down

i'd cut it all in 1" or 1 1/4" through and through.

What size stickers would one suggest?

I'd leave it till the weather gets cooler,then mill it half an inch over the finished diameter you want it to allow it to be planned in the future, you'd be surprised how much you lose ,nice grain on that lot

Star shake and suggestion of ring shake means fairly limited value. Definitely mill in cold weather and dry slowly. Don't hold your breath though. The walnut we have up here doesn't dry well.

good spot big j, i didn't see the shake.

 

in that case i recommend wood turning as you get more out of it than you do for boards.

it should yield some great looking blanks.

Get some wax or pva on the ends ASAP to stop the wood cracking and splitting any worse.

Mill it up will make nice timber and upload the pics ��
