Removing paint from slate

slate is pretty inert to anything my hearth came from a chemical lab and had rings from the acid beakers that were sat on it they came out with a belt sander shot blasting is pretty aggressive so i wouldn't do that i would go straight for the nitromors if it was me

nitromors is not what it used to be...i use starchem synstrip its about £25.00 for 5l. it's the only stuff that still works.

If you can get your hands on MEK, (Methy Ethyl Keytone) it is good for getting rid of or melting most things oil based. Used to use it for getting rid of oil stains from driveways.

Shot is aggressive but you wouldn't be using that, plastic bead or coco shell would be the media of choice, very gentle and no chemic.

Could use 'spirt of salts'. You get it from traditional ironmongers / hardware shops. It's a very strong acid so be careful and it's very cheap (£4) a bottle.

 

If you are worried about the surface you could take it to a CO2 / dry ice (carbon dioxide blaster's. Safe to use but might cost a few shillings.

No, a blow torch will damage the slate. I tried it once on an offcut when I was looking for ways to clean something off of a roof slate.

Tried nitromors, took the paint off but also a thin patch of the slate came off in the area I'd had the nitromors on...

Stonehealth in Dursley are the people to speak to. I use their paint softener and it is good stuff

you can get mek from boat chandlers they use for priming ribs for repairs its quite expensive
