Digital mapping tiles

Recommended Posts

I use Map Maker (free) to create maps for felling licenses but the digital mapping tiles I buy from OS MasterMap are between £25 and £45 each.

I am thinking that there must be a cheaper way of doing this digitally without going down the route of requesting paper maps from the FC and drawing boundaries on them.

Thanks in advance

I have the entire OS mapping for the UK in 25k that I obtained from a one legged man with a parrot on his shoulder, ahem!

It's about 28Gb in total and opens with Memory Map and Alpine Quest amongst others, the files are .qct.

It's really useful although the maps are dated from about 2008, I have them all loaded on my Android phone, you can overlay tracks etc. on them and print and email as well.

Is it this mapmaker your using?

Map Maker 4

We have just downloaded the free 30 day trial and you can upload tiles for free from map maker.

How do people find this program? it appears excellent value for a full mapping program with all the tiles for just £225

I've always used mapmaker pro but haven't upgraded from 3.5 as I haven't need to make planning applications for a few years.

Back in the day I'd scan 1:10000 paper copy and then use the utility menu to calibrate on 2 grid intersections.

You can do much the same with a .pdf, save it as a transparent tiff and use it as an overlay on one of the free 1:10,000 image is based on the Ordnance Survey StreetView data as long as you acknowledge the copyright.

You can also pay an annual copyright print fee

I would have thought licensing the area from emapsite for a year would cover most applications, any paper copies are allowable as archive after the digital licence has expired.

Really helpful links, thanks. Didn't realise you can get tiles through mapmaker.
