Anyone got any recommendations on buying an engine diagnostic box? plug it in and see what is getting the warning lamps to go off etc. Are they a common plug or do manufacturers use their own? Is there a conversion plug? etc.....

My lad was looking at one off of evil bay for 25 quid and asked my advise. He has a 2ltr Legacy fwiw!

I run a 2008 legacy and use an OBDII plug in Bluetooth code reader with an Android tablet - works a treat. It depends on the model year, tell him to go to the UK legacy forum, its all there.

The guy in the vid is only on about a code reader which will point you in the right direction. Proper diagnostic kit is a lot more in depth and will run engines through test cycles throwing up tons more information. I got a rip off Ford set up that works with the lap top, its been a godsend. Does pump codes, keys and tons of other stuff. The only extra I needed to get was the oddball plug for the Ranger.
