Ash and beach firewood

I'm looking for feedback regarding a proposal that was passed my way today. Long story short, I've been offered regular beach & ash firewood. 57 cubic meters of either specie. The timber is already split(firewood processor) and is unseasoned, for £3500 and delivery roughly £300 - £350. Would be selling the firewood £100 - £120 per 8 x 4 trailer. At the price quoted would this leave me room to make some extra cash or not worth the hardship. Would appreciate all opinions from experienced producers.

That's a reasonably good price to buy for (although I'm sure I could beat it ;) ) so the key question is how many cube are you putting in your trailer?

You're going to have handling costs and it also depends if you want to dry it in terms of expenses.

Yes it's a bulker load? I'll be totally honest I don't go by the cube, I just fill until the trailer is full. Roughly speaking now how many 8 x 4 loads would you have from 57 m3 or rough estimate of the profit that could be made from the price quoted. Please check my firewood album, the picture I have uploaded is my usual 8 x 4 trailer load.

If your trailer has 18" sides then you should get 44-45 loads of logs

And you should make approx £1000

Unfortunately doing the sums I can't see you'll make anything at that price. I'd guess the trailer is 8x4x2 so about £120 a load. If it's only 18inch deep it will still be around £90 (getting 40 loads) and you've still got to pay for your time loading, unloading and delivering as well as other costs.

Bare in mind that's just done in my head with guessed figures so I could be wrong but margins are very tight on firewood and there's a lot of people doing it. Best of luck though, it is still possible to make money.

I assume both the bulker and the trailer are loose filled - the answer would be very different if the bulker was crated and stacked. My rough calculations if your trailer is 8 by 4 by 2 feet ( about 1.8 cube) is that you would get 31 loads at a cost of around £125 per trailer load loose filled. I stand to be corrected on the maths. If the material was crated and stacked I would estimate around twice as much in the bulker or around £62.50 per trailer load.

To be accurate you need to measure your trailer and do the conversion to cubic meters online.

Our Ifor 10x5 holds 2m3 if slightly mounded. Presuming your trailer has similar hight sides yours would hold 1.28 m3 so retail at £4687 if selling at your higher price. £1187 for storing, loading and delivering 39 loads equals £30 per load. Not exactly a fortune to be made there.
