looks great but I've often wondered if non grooved boards are more slippery than the grooved ones over time? also I use 6x4 joists when laying decking as 4x2 can be a bit springy, are the joists sitting on gravel?

 

the grooved decking that is usually available is, for many people, popular because it is fashionable. practically, there are some problems, as regards slippery, grooved boards have only half the contact with footwear, so solid gives better friction, esp if treated with water resistant decking oil. also in time, the grooves in decking will fill with moss, and debris, (as the grooves tend to hold water), requiring regular pressure washing. flat decking does look better as the quality of the wood is visible, i always recommend doing it so, but it is getting difficult to find decking with aa flat side, (Huws Gray have it), most sources do decking grooved on both sides!

I kept skipping this post thinking it was about a log deck haha. That's stunning timber. Looks too good for the garden I'd happily have that in my house

Well not really, it's only 10ft by 11ft, but I suppose it's all a matter of perspective!

 

Had some reject western red cedar boards (not good enough for decking to sell due to waney edges on ends and underside) so knocked up a quick deck in the garden to hide a large tree stump. The beams underneath are 2x4 very slow growth European larch which were the outside boards of a very large beam.

 

2hrs 30 minutes to build, complete with a 20 minute table tennis break

 

 

 

I think this finally settles the argument (Clive!) that western red cedar is superior to deodar/Lebanon!

 

If anyone has decking they need, get in touch. Getting the Logosol four side planer back shortly so planing will go more quickly than on the other planer.
