Would poplar also be ideal for your baskets? A lot of veg boxes are made of it (or were)

 

I know of a market garden, now the site of a car factory, where poplars were planted with the intention of producing punnets or crated for the produce.

 

When I last visited the poplar tree company some 15 years ago they had a poplar slicing line mothballed.

Not really thought about it to be honest. I started off using ash and sweet chestnut because that's what I had to hand (the original devon splints used pine I believe). But they're not the easiest to use and I finally settled on cricket bat willow cos it was most definitely much easier to use and I could source it. Might have to look into doing a few experiments over the summer with poplar and see what it's like.

I know it was used for veg crates cos it bruises rather than splinters still used for cheese boxes
