Stihl 051 for milling?

Looking for a cheap saw to do a bit of hobby milling and there seem to be a few 051's about. A guy has one on the local gumtree for £250 which I think is a bit steep, also I know him and he buys and sells any old guff he can get his hands on, which is usually scrap. There is one on the bay which needs a bit of work but is running well. Would 89cc be big enough to do a bit of milling and what bar would suit? thanks

For hobby milling it will be OK. It will cope with smaller sizes, up to around 15-18" at a reasonable speed and will slowly get there on larger sizes. If you think you will ever need it then I would go for a 36" bar and a 30" mill. If it hasn't already been done I would swap over to 3/8", or if you can find a way to do it then 3/8" lo-pro and a GB lo-pro bar would give you the best performance.

For £250 you can have my 076. 111cc I think. Runs great, just never use it.

Yes, 89cc is big enough. I'm using a 70cc saw with a 24" (3/8", 1.5mm) bar. That combo has split 40" logs.

I have a few 051s that I use with a 24" mill and a 30" bar. Pulls lovely in a 22 "oak although I never use it as it's hard work Compared to my lucas mill.
