How have the various purchases worked out for people?

 

Ive contacted Owens at Rotherham. Been given 3 choices.

Standard 3+2

Uprated 4+2 or 5+2

Its a tipper and most of its loaded work will be fencing.

However when im truck driving it will be empty quite a bit and im wondering how hard the ride might be.

You are right to question this Goaty, I have overdone it on the Mitzy . When its empty the ride is harsh and the towbar is about 4" too high.

5+2 from Owens on my ranger, if I remember correctly it was a noticeably bouncier ride when they were fitted. However it's safe and handles ok and not too unpleasant been on couple of years now I think.

Never thought about towbar, thanks for that. I assume an adjustable Dixon Bate type towball would overcome this, assuming a whole new towbar isn't needed due to its design.

Another 1 someone took air off a ranger. Id prefer to keep costs and mechanics down.

Air is good though i prefer it on heavy trucks i drive.

Monroe used to do a load levelled shock absorber, basically pump the thing up with compressed air and it raised the car. Its the best of both worlds but you really need an onboard compressor and a dump valve .

 

There are some in the shed, will take some snaps of them.

My old car used to have self levelling shocks, but needed no external air.

It used the up and down motion of the suspension to pump itself up? setting off with a heavy trailer/full boot it would throw sparks off the towbar, 100m down the road it looked like empty! pretty magical things they were.

It was a straight swap from the standard shocks.

No idea if such are available for all vehicles though?
