Stump Grinding - South Bucks (lots of it)

Hi, we moved to a new house (for us) last summer which has a large garden which for the last nine months we have gradually been clearing. Recently had an arborist in to cut down the last of the trees that needed removing (hedge line that had got out of control).

 

We have probably a solid weeks work...maybe more...stump grinding that need30-40 tree stumps plus stumps from woody shrubs.

 

We've had a quote from current arborist which seems very expensive so very happy to use someone else.

 

If nobody interested in quoting I'd be interested to know what people think is a fair rate for 5 days work. One person and a stump grinder.

 

Access is very good.

The biggest is a meter across plus roots, I would say there are another ten to fifteen which are large (60 cm across). The rest are anything from 15 to 30 cm across.

 

On top of that are quite a lot of much smaller what I suppose would have been suckers.

Ok, 2 days absolutely max with no clear up for a big grinder. Maybe even a day.

He's quoted £4000 inc VAT one person operating a Predator 50. Reckons it will take a week.

 

That includes the hire charge of the grinder...

By way of explanation, if your guy was using a smaller pedestrian grinder he might well take a week at it, say £400 a day x 5= £2000

A big grinder might charge you £1100 but do it in a day.

I don't understand the rationale for charging me to hire the equipment though....I mean that's like having your cake and eating it as a contractor. No capital outlay/depreciation/maintenance on the equipment and charge the client for the hire when you need it?

 

Very happily pay for a bigger machine if it does it quicker!

We also have to hire when grinding so are more exy than others who have their own. We do however, always tell that to the customer. Mostly we still get the job as I guess by then they 'know' us but there's no hard feelings at all if they go with the cheaper option.

This guy is "trigger" on here, got a big tracked chipper, worth a call.

 

2nd chris.....he's the man... you need reasonable access for the big machine.

 

Or if you 5' access contact Jonathan Vartan on 07973 289103....he has a seriously big machine will travel wherever you are in the southeast and I think he owns a steam engine as well! What's not to like.

But if they buy the machine then they have the initial cost plus maintenance.

By hiring you are paying for all of it together.(some of the capital and some of the running costs.

The guy should only be making money on the labour!

It is cheaper to own the bigger machines but it's still not cheap!
