Aspen has a shelf life of 5 years , or should i say the container it is in has a 5 year shelf life , Pump fuel here in Argyll is going "off" after a matter of weeks .

If your repair shop "Think" it means they do not know or do not know how to test a machine correctly for faults , this leads us back to your first problem , did they "Think" they had corrected the original fault or did they check the saw over correctly and diagnose the problem ??

Five years? Then that's fine then.

Looking for advice on what to try next...

Wife bought me a new 550xp two years ago via an online shop in the north. Took it to a local dealer because it wasn't starting in Nov 2015 - dealer put in the hot start fix. Left it alone over the winter. Late Feb started it - a bit weak but thought it might be the chain was blunt. Used it for 20 mins on Aspen and then it wouldn't start. Took it back and they said there was problem with the piston in the barrel. The warranty was one week out of date - so quoting £350 to repair. Total work on the chip is 10 hours.

Is the advice just buy Stihl??

The advice is to buy an Echo.

I've had problems with my 2014 550xp. I do most of my work in the tree with my 540xp so the 550 doesn't get a huge amount of use. I was doing a job felling some Ash and the 550 kept stalling so I put it in the truck and finished the job with my 372xp. When I got home I looked at the plug and it looked a bit weak. I contacted Husky customer service as the saw was just over a year old and out of standard warranty. They said to take it to a Husky dealer with proof of purchase and they would consider extending the warranty. Dealer said that the saw had a bore seize due to an air leak, but said the saw had only done 13hrs work. Cutting a long story short the saw was repaired under warranty, but took over a month to get fixed and although it runs really well when in use, it cuts out after the chainbrake is released. Been back to the repairer twice and to another dealer once. all seems well until it's been used a couple of times..the only way to keep it running from tick over is the give the bulb a couple of pumps. By the way all my saws are running on Aspen and I've had no trouble with others at all.

Piston and cylinders are available but your looking at the best part of £250

Check the cylinder out as I had one in recently that had a fairly scored piston but the cylinder didnt have a mark on it which can bring the cost down to about £80 including a couple of gaskets.

£80 sounds better. I bet there's Youtube video of how to take the cylinder off. Otherwise, I think I can get an Echo for just a little more than the repair price...
