Just going through an old survey and came across these images of an old Field Maple on the Tempsford Hall estate, which I manage down in Central Beds.

Magnificent tree.

Is it a bird? Is it a plane?

Stopped by this tree in my woodland today and instantly recognised the sweet chestnut leaves. Then it struck me as odd because I hadn't planted any there and none of the others were that big. Also, it looked like alder bark.

It's definitely an alder but there's a sweet chestnut growing out of it. Must've been a small hollow where a nut was stashed. Wonder how long they'll stay like this?

How close to ground level does the chestnut emerge? I wonder if its seed (and subsequent roots) were/are entangled with the alder and the two stems have grown up in contact with each other - the faster growing alder has subsequently engulfed the chestnut. I think you need to cut it down and show us some cross sections……..

(please don’t - it’s ace!!)

It's a couple of feet up. You could be right about one being engulfed by the other.
