help with fungus ID

Hey all. Can anyone help us with the ID of this fungus growing 12ft from the base of a 6ft diameter veteran Ash. its name is Barry up til now. Cheers

Could be Phellinus ferreus But its not one I've seen before so maybe someone else will have a better idea.

I think ferreus is mainly found on dead branches? Favours hazel. Could be Phellinus punctatus possibly? or indeed hispidus as already suggested. Hard to tell from photo.

I think on that tree its growing on the redundant wood from an old tear out / pruning cut, there seems to be wound wood around it which would suggest this anyway. I dont think its hispidus, as it makes a wide bracket and if this was an immature specimen it would probably be more velvety and new looking.

 

You could be right with punctatus though.
