Sorry if this is a stupid question, I know my thoughts, but do people split to logs early or keep stacked in lengths? I'm asking about logs that'll be shed stacked.

Thanks in advance.

Hi MATE is this for own use then split when green much easier on your kit then stack in a dry windy conditions of the ground dries very quickly thanks John

I cut mine whilst green into 2' or 3' lengths (depending on how I'm building the stack) then split and stack them outside in the wind.

It means I need to cut them down to length when dry, but it reduces handling considerably.

I split mine using an axe and use it with a wooden maul if they're 3' long

It depends on how much space I have in my log stores. I prefer to cut them to length for stacking somewhere convenient before splitting them all in batch with a hired in splitter. Some of the large bits I get dropped off by friendly tree surgeons are too heavy to lift back up again so I have to cut them shorter :D
