did you use a chain saw to carve out the holes for youre joints? have you wedged (technical term!) the joint on the outside?

 

Yes and kind of wedged.

I cut the bench ends first, placed that level on a log, offered up the legs penciled round them and then cut the holes.

Then drilled a 15mm hole at each end and whitteled an offcut to fit and tapped it in.
