No idea. Customer wanted the tree down, and asked for me to turn into firewood. I was allowed to keep two sections of the trunk for milling.

 

They were milled at 2.5", so I will have a couple of years to figure out what to make of them before they have dried sufficiently. I am considering building a kiln, but my wife isn't keen on yet another big unsightly box in the back yard

I managed to convince the customer to GIVE me the timber for free, which basically meant that he got less firewood than he would otherwise have gotten. I am quite happy about that arrangement – in addition to the £1,000 he paid to have the tree taken down, branches cut up as firewood, brash chipped and stump removed.

Quite a bit of fungal decay in that timber. How long ago was it felled?

No idea. On estate I work on. Felled before I got here. I'm sure it's been down a while. The trunk I milled was suspended of ground by the root plate.

 

One end more decay than other. Gets worse as I drop through log. Top planks alright. All solid.

 

Plan to other half of log later. Will amputate decayed end prior to milling.

I did a 30" dia beech about 4 weeks ago. It had been down at least 4 years but the whole log was off the ground with the top of it held up by a 3' wall. The council had removed all the branches and all I had to do was cross cut it twice to length. Only the top log was slightly spalted and some of the bark was starting to come away. If it had been on the deck I think it would have been well spalted and probably even soft on the bottom half
