subaru 9hp spluttering and hunting

i haven't done anything on subaru engines at all and am looking for some pointers i have a brand new 9hp subaru engine and it hunts all thru the speed range and does an intermittent back fire every minute or so any pointers i have changed the fuel and cleaned the filter bowl but there was nothing to speak off in it cheers in advance

The engine on my greenmech chipper was doing the same thing. That's a B&S, and turned out it was a blocked jet in the carb. Full strip, ultrasonic clean and rebuild sorted both the hunting and backfiring. Tho if it's new, I can't imagine the card jets should be blocked?

As others have said it sounds like the carb/ fuel issue. But as its new I'd be taking it back and standing and waiting for them to look at it!

Runs sweet as a nut, and holds steady throttle. Like it did originally. Must be a carb / fuelling issue.

Sometimes the main jet in the car is partially blocked.had similar probs on a Honda and it was a fine needle blocking it.a set of car reamers sometimes helps to slightly widen jet and allow more fuel through.problem Def sounds like a shortage of fuel. If the engine has been stored for a while with fuel in it may be a gumming up of the jet too..as a last resort look for a number on the jet telling you jet size (1.2) or similar and change the jet for one size bigger.

Check fuel supply into carb, we had a Kohler last year with an inline fuel filter inside the pipe not visible. We removed that, fitted a Briggs inline filter and it was fine
