Working abroad

Has anyone any experience of working abroad? I'm in the fairly fortunate position of being single and having no particular ties so am looking to find work abroad when i finish my arb course in July.

I'm aware that it will be difficult for someone with limited experience to find any work, especially abroad, but I've spent a bit of time in Germany and am pretty keen on settling there for a year or 2, in particular, Berlin.

I've googled everything from ' arbs+berlin' to 'unexperienced+english+tree+surgeon+looking+for+work+in+berlin' and not had much luck.

Arbjobs.com has a few jobs abroad listed, particularly a couple in Vienna and Salzburg that have caught my eye.

If anyone could give me any pointers that would be great.

I reckon you'll have no problem finding work abroad if you have arb qualifications. Even if you have limited or no experience there would be many companies that would be willing to take you on and train you up. I did one year in chicago when I was 18 but it was semi-sorted through college and it was a great experience. I've got a few ties now but I'd still like to go and work abroad again for a year or so. If you get lucky you might find a job where they provide cheap accommodation near base. That would be wise because its quite daunting starting a new job abroad as well as trying to set up some decent digs. Try asking lecturers at your college if they know of any such positions and if that fails try ringing up other colleges too as they tend to have lists for those that do gap year ND courses.

I recomend just calling a dozen companies in Berlin, have a look in their version of the yellow pages. You'll find it online.

Going straight over to a job has its advantages, but if the company turns out to be not to your liking then if they got you your accomadation then things get difficult.

Don't forget about Norway,Sweden,Danmark,Canada etc.I don't know what the pay is like in Germany these days, but you don't seem to hear of many folk going to work a season there like you did ten years ago.

iam from berlin and i only work with a good friend in berlin. i dont have meet other nice treeworkers (personelly and as a arborist) so i can say its not the best area where you can work. the next thing is that there are to much gardeners, facility managments etc... who make the prices down. in my opinion its hard to find a good firm where you can learn advanced skills in arboriculture.

but you are very welcome to come over maybe do some jobs together or make a rec climb. will show you the city can give you tipps where to go. also i can give you adresses of frims in berlin if you want.

greetings from germany - wolf
