I use ladders as my main method of access. I also have no qualms about using a chainsaw from a ladder if the situation lends itself. Its like anything else, use your common sense.

Can you explain the circumstances when you'd be comfortable using a chainsaw while on a ladder steve...just curious

Many scenarios. A line of spindly trees/hedges being topped at the same height. I'd be more than happy to stick the ladder up, strop round at the top and go to work.

Removing a low limb on a tree, ladder up, strop on and get to work.

The notion of never ever using a chainsaw from a ladder is ludicrous to me i'm afraid. I will do whatever is the most efficient for whatever job i'm tackling, and will carry it out in a safe manner.

I recently topped some young lombardies at extension ladder height, maybe 4 meters.

Climbed up, stropped in, topped 'em.

There was a chance the ladder might have taken a whack, but hey ho.

The job had enough money on it to lose a ladder.

I'll echo Steves comments.

We've just repollarded 90 ivy smothered dirty pops with the knuckles at about 15'.

Wouldn't have fancied anyone's chances without a ladder, not if you wanted to make money.

It's very rare I'd use a chainsaw from a ladder without being stropped in, I should add.

This is a pointless thread - as said before a ladder is still a useful tool for tree work.

Not really pointless. Think of all the people who have had it drummed into their head that ladders should never be used for tree work full stop. Nice for them to see other more realistic opinions.
