Either way this wasn't my prior understanding. I thought once you got into vehicles of over 3.5t gvw (excluding agri tractors) it was tachograph required.

 

Yes your right apart from the exemptions that are allowed.

A 50c iveco has a gvw of 5.2t so it's probably around 2800kg kerb weight. Put up to a 2.4t excavator on the back and you are tachograph exempt according to the above item.

 

 

The item above was from the gov. Website. From what I gather if your combined work Vehicle weighs less than 7.5 you are alright.

They changed the laws in 2013 to make it easier for the average worker to get by without one, aiming more at haulage types. You can also now travel 100k from your base where as before it was only 50k. I think I'm getting this right.

They reduced the allowed tacho start weight in 2014 (I think) from 7500kg to 3500kg. However the other exemptions still apply.

Yes and that example of the 5.2 Iveco is interesting, it will always need an O licence

 

The interesting thing is it can also tow 3 tonne whilst fully loaded minus the nose weight of the trailer.

No, only if for hire and reward, not shifting your own wood, plant etc

A dual purpose vehicle ( 2), a truck with winch and hiab , perhaps interchangeable twistlock bodies may well be classed as a dual purpose vehicle. Advantage being not AG registered and allowed on the motorways. Perhaps

 

Exemption 1 tractor has too many restrictions, see last paragraph.

So you could have a iveco 50c/65c for transporting your own exavator (for your own use) and you wouldn't need a tacho or O license?

 

You will still need O licence but no tacho if you drive the digger and are within 100km of base.
