I would be extremely careful to follow industry standards re. the assembly of your system, as you're gonna be tugging on it with a tensioned wire rope. If you rig up a heath-robinson and it comes undone....could find yourself in the "hurt locker"...

So much great info on the web about chains and stuff, really addictive when you get into it.

Agree.... I'm not looking to do anything dodgy/ dangerous.

Seems easy enough to find info on the various bits and pieces of equipment but I haven't found much info about piecing the whole thing together.

What's wrong with putting a slider on the cable? I've been thinking of doing it for a while but usually when the tirfor is out rather then the proper winch.

I don't know if there is anything wrong with doing that on the Tirfor cable.... which is why I was asking.

I'm wondering if a sliding keyhole might kink the cable where it meets the end of the Tirfor cable eyelet?.... maybe somebody on Arbtalk has already tried or is using this??

Is the idea with the slider to the use the tirfor rope itself as the choker?

No, definitely not for that..... the choker cable does all the choking.

The loose end of the choker chain is dropped into the sliding keyhole.

Sliding keyholes are often used on the big forestry drum cable winches.

Hope this makes sense! :thumbup1:

Slider on the cable, so obvious and simple and cheap!!!

I think I'll order a couple now and a new chain from Clarks!!

You had the answer all along:thumbup:

Not sure it would do the end of the Tirfor wire rope any good though??.... when it's under tension it may tend to kink the cable to the side slightly.

I think the main bonus of using a sliding keyhole might be for the extra redirect opportunities..... hmmm. Still unsure.

K I get it now. I think you're absolutely right, it will knacker your tirfor cable, not immediately, but over time. The tirfor cable is metal core, to resist crushing, and really doesn't like being bent at sharp angles. I believe the usual forestry drum winch cable is fiber core and has more strands in it's composition, thus making it more suitable for bending under tension.

Seems like you are getting a chain anyway, the only matter of debate is how to connect that chain to the tirfor cable. Well, thats simple, you connect to the hook. With a shackle or a master link. If the tirfor cable terminates in an eye - sans hook - then you just shackle onto the eye. Under no circumstances would you want to connect the load back to the cable itself at an angle, no how, no way :thumbup:
